EU Leaders Endorse US-Iran Peace Agreement, Call for Rapid Action and Greater Energy Security

The CSR Journal Magazine

European Union leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa have expressed their approval of the recently achieved peace agreement between the United States and Iran. They underscored the importance of immediate and comprehensive implementation by all involved parties. The leaders highlighted that restoring freedom of navigation is crucial for the global economy and that the EU is prepared to aid in developing a long-term peace strategy for West Asia.

On June 15, 2026, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, took to social media platform X to assert her support for the agreement. She called for the swift toll-free reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that this action would be vital for both regional stability and the global economic landscape. Von der Leyen emphasised that this situation could pave the way for broader discussions on peace and security in the Middle East.

In her address, the EU chief also urged for the termination of Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programmes alongside its destabilising engagements within the region. Furthermore, she remarked on the ongoing conflict in Lebanon, urging all parties to respect its sovereignty and adhere to a genuine ceasefire.

Global Response to Peace Agreement

Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, echoed von der Leyen’s sentiments, advocating for the peaceful resolution of remaining disputes under international law. He stated that the European Union stands ready to contribute to advancing a comprehensive approach for sustained peace across the Middle East. Costa expressed hope for an end to the ongoing conflict, underlining the necessity of reinstating free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Japan’s Foreign Minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, also welcomed the diplomatic development. He reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to proactive diplomatic measures, emphasising the urgency for de-escalation of tensions. Motegi stressed that Iran must guarantee the free and safe navigation of all vessels, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, an essential conduit for global trade.

International leaders, spanning Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, have embraced the peace agreement as a significant diplomatic achievement aimed at re-establishing stability in West Asia. They described it as an opportunity to ease pressures on global energy markets and foster economic growth, while also moving towards a resolution regarding Iran’s nuclear programme.

Details Surrounding the Agreement

The diplomatic breakthrough between Washington and Tehran was made public on Sunday, with President Trump claiming that the accord would usher in “peace and security” for West Asia, while facilitating the reopening of the critical energy passage at the Strait of Hormuz. Following the announcement, Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, confirmed the agreement and elaborated on Iran’s conditions for future negotiations.

According to information from Iran’s state-affiliated Press TV, Gharibabadi mentioned that an official signing ceremony for the peace deal is scheduled for Friday, after which the Memorandum of Understanding will be publicly accessible. He also indicated that Iran would enter a proposed 60-day negotiation phase for a final agreement only after verifying that the United States has met its obligations regarding the cessation of hostilities, removal of the blockade, and release of Iranian assets.

The anticipated signing of the peace deal is set to take place in Switzerland, marking a potential turning point in diplomatic relations between the two nations. The agreement signifies not only a resolution to ongoing tensions but also a crucial step towards restoring vital energy logistics in the region.
