In a significant anti-narcotics operation, the Assam Rifles seized methamphetamine tablets worth over Rs 23 crore from an abandoned vehicle in Champhai district. The operation highlights ongoing efforts by security forces to curb drug trafficking along the sensitive Indo-Myanmar border region.
Intelligence-Based Joint Operation
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with local police, launched a joint search operation on Thursday night. During the operation near Hmunhmeltha Road in Champhai district, personnel recovered approximately 7.9 kg of methamphetamine tablets from a vehicle bearing an Assam registration number.
Smugglers Flee, Contraband Recovered
Preliminary investigations suggest that the smugglers abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene after sensing the presence of security forces. Officials estimate the seized drugs to be worth around Rs 23.73 crore in the international market, underlining the scale of the smuggling attempt.
Handover for Further Investigation
The recovered narcotics, along with the vehicle, have been handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai district for further investigation. Authorities are now working to trace the origins of the consignment and identify the network involved.
Methamphetamine: A Dangerous Substance
Methamphetamine, often referred to as a “crazy drug,” is a highly addictive and banned substance in India. It poses serious health risks and has been a growing concern for law enforcement agencies due to its increasing circulation in border areas.
Manhunt Underway
Security agencies have launched a manhunt to apprehend those involved in the smuggling operation. Officials believe that intensified surveillance and coordinated actions will help dismantle drug trafficking networks operating in the region.
