The state of Gujarat has demonstrated its commitment to combating drug-related issues by destroying narcotics valued at Rs 2,153 crore. This operation took place on July 20 at Dahej, led by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi as part of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s initiative for a Drug-Free Gujarat. The event was organised by Enviro Infrastructure Limited.

During the programme, Deputy Chief Minister Sanghavi, in conjunction with members of the Drug Disposal Committee, conducted a thorough inspection of the seized narcotics, evaluating case details to ensure compliance with legal standards. The entire consignment, which included 13,249.127 kilograms of drugs and 571,028 bottles of narcotic substances, was destroyed using environmentally safe methods.

This destruction aligns with the national vision of a “Drug-Free India” articulated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and adheres to the policy of “Zero Tolerance” towards drug offences. The operation covered narcotics seized from various police units throughout Gujarat, with 867 cases represented in this monumental action.

New Initiatives and Awareness Programs Launched

In conjunction with the destruction event, a new NDPS Handbook was unveiled at the GACL Company in Dahej. This handbook, developed by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force of the Gujarat Police, is designed to provide practical assistance to investigating officers, thereby enhancing the enforcement of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The awareness campaign included a video titled “Drug-Free Gujarat,” featuring personal stories of individuals who have successfully overcome addiction. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Gujarat Police to strengthen public awareness regarding the significance of combating drug abuse.

Deputy Chief Minister Sanghavi praised the police for their ongoing efforts to tackle the narcotic crisis, which he described as one of the major social challenges contemporary society faces. The police have reportedly achieved significant successes in disrupting criminal networks related to drugs, even in challenging scenarios such as turbulent waters along the India-Pakistan border.

Future Steps in Addressing Drug-Related Challenges

According to officials, the sustained anti-drug campaign that has been in progress for the last eighteen months has led to the seizure of narcotics valued in the thousands of crores. The current conviction rate for drug-related cases in Gujarat stands at approximately 65 per cent, indicating a robust legal framework supporting drug enforcement. There are plans to further enhance legal measures to strive towards a 100 per cent conviction rate.

The Deputy Chief Minister emphasised the importance of community involvement in the fight against drug abuse. He stated that while stringent police action is critical, achieving the goal of a Drug-Free Gujarat will require active participation from the community and every citizen. His statement signifies the necessity of a collective societal effort in addressing this pressing issue.

As part of recognising the outstanding contributions of police personnel, 278 officers were awarded a total of Rs 59.42 lakh for their exemplary work in 21 major drug cases under the State Government’s Drug Reward Policy. Various dignitaries, including local MLAs and senior law enforcement officials, were present during this significant occasion, highlighting a united front against drug smuggling and distribution.
