Donald Trump Envoy Proposes Italy to Replace Iran in FIFA World Cup 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

A new controversy has arisen regarding the FIFA World Cup 2026, centred around a proposal from a U.S. official advocating for Iran’s replacement by Italy. Paolo Zampolli, a special envoy for Donald Trump, reportedly suggested this idea during discussions with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The proposal introduces a political dimension to ongoing geopolitical tensions and concerns related to travel arrangements for the event.

Earlier, Iran suggested the possibility of relocating their matches from the United States due to the current political climate. Despite these discussions, FIFA has stated that the schedule for the tournament remains unchanged. Zampolli confirmed his suggestion in an interview with the Financial Times, framing it as a dual aspiration for Italian football and his personal dreams.

The envoy noted, “I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup. I am an Italian native, and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a U.S.-hosted tournament.” Zampolli emphasised Italy’s pedigree as four-time world champions, asserting their credentials for inclusion.

Current Status of Iran’s Participation

As it stands, Iran is still slated to compete in the FIFA World Cup 2026. The national team has qualified and is set to participate in group-stage matches scheduled in the United States, specifically in cities such as Los Angeles and Seattle. Despite earlier apprehensions surrounding travel logistics and requests for match relocations to Mexico, FIFA has reassured that all games are to be conducted as planned.

Gianni Infantino visited the Iranian camp recently, reaffirming that preparations are continuing without disruption. Officials from Iran have publicly supported this stance, stating their intention to adhere to FIFA’s final decisions while maintaining readiness for the tournament.

At this point, the possibility of Iran being replaced is hypothetical. No formal response has been issued by FIFA or related governing entities regarding any alterations to Iran’s participation in the uppermost event of world football.

FIFA’s Authority on Team Replacement

Ultimately, any potential change involving replacing Iran would be contingent on FIFA’s directives. According to the tournament’s regulations, the governing body possesses the authority to select a substitute team should a qualified nation opt out. This is not a straightforward procedure, however.

Typically, continental football confederations advocate for teams from their respective regions when seeking replacements. In this scenario, the Asian Football Confederation would likely propose an alternative Asian team for Iran’s position if such a situation were to arise. This makes the inclusion of Italy improbable, given they did not secure qualification through traditional means.

Despite Italy’s rich footballing history and four World Cup titles, the absence of their qualification narrows the prospects of them stepping in for Iran. With the World Cup commencing on June 11, 2026, the present status reflects Iran’s continued inclusion, and any alterations would necessitate significant changes in the weeks leading up to the tournament.
