Delhi Works Maximum Minutes Daily on Work: National Time Use Survey 2024

According to the recent data conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Delhi spends an average of 563 minutes each day on work-related activities, while the people of Nagaland spend the lowest, 329 minutes. The time-use survey (TUS) 2024 revealed that Delhi residents spend more time on work-intensive activities in their daily routine, spending the maximum time on ‘employment and related activities’. Delhites surpassed the national average of 440 minutes and their own 510-minute record in the last such survey in 2019.
Goa followed closely, at about 536 minutes on work-related tasks, and finished second in the survey. Other states that made it to the top five are Pondicherry, Haryana, and Maharashtra.

Gender Inclusive Policies

The time-use survey tracks people’s allocation of their time across various activities, such as paid work, childcare, volunteering and socialising. The main aim of the survey was to assess men’s and women’s participation in both paid and unpaid work. The survey will provide insights into times spent on unpaid caregiving, volunteer work and domestic services, mostly undertaken by women.
Findings from this survey will become crucial in shaping policies on poverty, gender, equality and human development. Globally, such time-use surveys are common. India’s first National Time survey, The NSS Report in India, was released in 2019.
