On September 14, 2023, following a complaint, four individuals were arrested for allegedly extorting Rs 2.15 lakh from a 44-year-old man in the Najafgarh area of Delhi. According to police reports, the accused lured the victim through a dating application and then threatened him to facilitate the unlawful transfer of funds. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mandeep (38), Preeti (32), Kamlesh (42), and Ritu (40).

Details of the Incident

The victim, a resident of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, was reportedly summoned to Dhansa Metro Station by a woman he met on the dating platform. After meeting the woman, he was taken to a house located in southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh, where he was allegedly threatened. The accusers forced him to transfer money via several UPI and bank transactions, alongside demanding cash payments.

It has been reported that the victim transferred Rs 1.93 lakh through bank-to-bank transfers and UPI transactions. Additionally, he handed over Rs 22,000 in cash to the accused. Chhawla police station initiated a case following the complaint and took swift action to establish the sequence of events.

Police investigations led to the identification of the roles played by the four accused, culminating in their arrests. Following the apprehension, law enforcement recovered Rs 70,500 linked to the case. The remaining funds were traced to various bank accounts, which have since been frozen to prevent any further withdrawals or diversion of the money. Ongoing efforts are being made to recover the rest of the extorted amount.

Background of the Accused

According to police records, Mandeep, who resides in the Sonipat district of Haryana, has a troubled past with four previous cases against him. These include three alleged extortion cases registered in Sonipat and one case relating to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Kanjhawala police station. Kamlesh has also been implicated in another case recorded at Dwarka North police station in 2023.

Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation to ascertain the extent of the accused individuals’ criminal backgrounds. Their efforts aim to uncover any further connections that the accused may have and to identify potential additional victims who may have fallen prey to similar schemes.
