The CSR Journal Magazine

Three individuals have been arrested in Teliamura, Tripura, following allegations of extorting money under the pretext of collecting donations for Durga Puja, as well as assaulting an on-duty woman police officer. The incident reportedly unfolded when the complainant, Sanjib Chakma, was driving through the town and was intercepted by members of a local club.

According to police reports, Chakma’s vehicle was stopped near a cafeteria in the Shantinagar area, where he was coerced into contributing Rs 4,000 as a supposed donation for the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations. In an attempt to escape an impending assault, Chakma fled to the Teliamura police station to lodge a formal complaint, fearing for his safety.

Police Response and Arrest

Upon receiving Chakma’s complaint, a police team, which included personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), led by Woman Sub-Inspector Sumitra Debbarma, responded swiftly. They proceeded to the location of the local club to apprehend the accused. At approximately 1:30 AM, while travelling along the National Highway, the complainant identified the individuals responsible.

The situation escalated when the police attempted to detain the suspects, who allegedly reacted aggressively. Reports indicate that the accused not only obstructed the officers but also misbehaved with the TSR personnel present. When two female officers tried to step in, one of them was reportedly struck by a motorcycle, causing her to fall onto the road.

The suspects have been identified as Dhruba Saha, Sudip Chakraborty, and Uttam Deb, all residents of the Shantinagar area. Their actions prompted the Teliamura Police to initiate further legal proceedings.

Legal Proceedings and Charges Filed

Following the arrests, the Officer-in-Charge of Teliamura Police Station, Jayanta Kumar Dey, confirmed that a suo motu case has been registered. The case includes serious charges such as forcible extortion, obstruction of government duty, and assault on a female police officer. Dey provided updates on the case details, stating that it has been logged under case number 56.

On October 1, following the arrests, the Khowai Court ordered the three individuals to be held in judicial custody for a period of 14 days. This decision reflects the seriousness of the charges against them and underscores the police’s commitment to addressing such criminal activities in the region.

Local authorities are taking this incident seriously, highlighting the need to maintain law and order as the Durga Puja festival approaches. This case serves as a reminder of ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and uphold the rule of law during significant cultural events in Tripura.
