Delhi High Court Lawyers’ Canteen Stops Meals Amid LPG Shortage

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Lawyers’ Canteen located at the Delhi High Court has ceased the preparation and service of main course meals due to a shortage of LPG gas cylinders. A notice issued by Sandeep Sharma from the canteen management informed that the kitchen is unable to cook main course items because of the LPG supply issues. This notice was directed to the Secretary of the court as well as all advocates associated with it.

No Timeline for LPG Supply Restoration

The notice clarified that the management currently lacks any information regarding when the LPG supply will resume. It also stated that main course meals will be made available once the gas supply comes back online. Meanwhile, the canteen has assured that other items not reliant on LPG for preparation, such as sandwiches, salads, and fruit chaat, will continue to be offered.

Regret Over Inconvenience

The management expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to advocates and visitors, urging their understanding and cooperation until normal operations can be restored. The situation has impacted many individuals who rely on the canteen for daily meals.

Wider LPG Supply Challenges

Public Response to LPG Shortages

This shortage has led to long queues forming outside gas agencies in Uttar Pradesh, with consumers striving to secure fresh LPG cylinders for household cooking. Ajay Nishad, a local resident, indicated that the difficulty in acquiring gas has persisted for about ten days, noting that up to 400 to 500 individuals have been seen waiting outside gas agencies.

Government Measures and Prioritization

In light of the LPG supply disruptions, the Central government has introduced a 25-day waiting period for domestic LPG refills. The current crisis in global energy supplies, particularly due to the conflict in West Asia, has magnified issues related to LPG availability in India.

Essential Commodities Act Invocation

To address the supply disruptions, the Union government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act, prioritizing the domestic supply of LPG. This includes reserving larger allocations for households, hospitals, and essential services. Commercial distribution has faced restriction in certain regions as a result.

Clarification from the Petroleum Ministry

The Ministry of Petroleum has stated that the invocation of the Essential Commodities Act has created a clear priority listing for natural gas distribution to effectively manage the current shortages. Under the latest directives, homes will receive a guaranteed supply of domestic piped gas, along with CNG for vehicles, while other sectors will encounter supply limitations based on their average consumption over the previous six months.

Logistical Hurdles in Natural Gas Supply

India typically imports around 30 percent of its natural gas through the Strait of Hormuz. The ongoing regional conflict has introduced additional logistical challenges, complicating the situation further.
