Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the state government has established a committee tasked with drafting the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The Chief Minister stated that implementation of the law is contingent upon the committee’s forthcoming report. Speaking to the media, Fadnavis emphasized the need for this legal framework, which aims to unify personal laws applicable to all citizens irrespective of religion.

Fadnavis made his remarks on September 14, 2026, following statements made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the broader implementation of the UCC across states governed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) by the year 2029. The establishment of the committee marks a significant step towards fulfilling this commitment in Maharashtra.

UCC Status In Other States

The Uniform Civil Code has recently seen legislative action in several Indian states. Notably, it was introduced and passed in Uttarakhand in February 2024, followed by Gujarat in March 2026, and Assam in May 2026. These developments illustrate a growing momentum towards the nationwide application of the UCC, complementing Maharashtra’s current efforts.

The introduction of the UCC aims to standardise laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and other civil matters, thereby ensuring equality and justice among all citizens. In addressing media questions, Fadnavis expressed concern that some opposition members trivialised the importance of the summit’s outcomes. He asserted that those with an overly narrow perspective might feel resentful towards India’s accomplishments, leading them to undermine significant diplomatic achievements. The Chief Minister condemned such viewpoints as misplaced and counterproductive to the nation’s progress.

Fadnavis articulated the importance of unity and cooperation demonstrated during the BRICS Summit, where leaders from eleven member countries engaged in discussions aimed at fostering collaboration in various sectors.
