The Indian Army has reported a notable reduction in the presence of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China along the Northern Borders as of 2025. According to the Annual Report for 2025-26, the PLA has scaled down its forces to approximately ten Combined Arms Brigade-sized units positioned opposite the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This adjustment has raised the prospect of greater stability in the region, attributed to ongoing political, diplomatic, and military dialogues between India and China.

The report indicates that the Indian Army’s deployment across all LAC sectors remains strong and is adequately prepared for any emerging contingencies. While the reduction of Chinese military forces is seen as a positive development, the Indian Army retains a commitment to readiness in response to potential security challenges.

Dialogue and Engagement Contribute to Stability

Military dialogue between India and China resumed during the year, including the significant 23rd Corps Commander-level meeting held in Eastern Ladakh in October 2025. Border Personnel Meetings, which are critical for addressing cross-border issues, have continued in a cooperative atmosphere. These interactions reportedly foster mutual understanding and have assisted in reducing tensions along the borders.

The Army asserts that this diplomatic engagement has played an essential role in stabilising the Northern Borders. However, it emphasised the necessity for ongoing vigilance, stating that its forces remain capable of addressing any security threats that may arise. Lessons learned from Operation Sindoor, which highlighted advancements in multi-domain capabilities, intelligence, and technological superiority, have led to a reassessment of force structures within the Army.

Focus areas for improvement include enhancing joint operational readiness and adopting emerging technologies to address modern security challenges.

Jammu and Kashmir Security Situation Remains Stable

The security conditions in Jammu and Kashmir have reportedly remained under control, as noted in the Army’s report. It highlights a significant decline in violence levels and states that there were no incidents of stone pelting throughout the year. Local communities are increasingly participating in government and Army-led development initiatives, contributing to a positive environment.

The report also details a change in the situation following Operation Sindoor, where stabilisation efforts were aided by discussions between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) on May 10 and 12, 2025. Although the Army acknowledged that some unpredictability persists, overall conditions have improved. During the year, six infiltration attempts were made by terrorists, resulting in the neutralisation of twelve Pakistani intruders.

While infiltration attempts along the Line of Control have decreased when compared to prior years, there is a noted shift of focus among terrorists towards the International Border, frequently for the smuggling of narcotics and weaponry.

Increase in Ceasefire Violations Post-Operation Sindoor

Despite the decrease in infiltration activities, the report cites a considerable rise in ceasefire violations along the Line of Control in 2025. A total of 163 violations were recorded, a stark increase from merely two in the previous year. Notably, 124 of these incidents occurred during the execution of Operation Sindoor, highlighting the tensions that still exist.

The Army additionally remarked on a sharp decline in youth recruitment into terrorist factions, with only one local individual joining such groups during the year. This trend allegedly undermines Pakistan’s narrative concerning home-grown terrorism, echoing the successes of Indian security measures.

Drone incursions have also been highlighted as a growing concern, with 863 reported incidents across India’s western border in 2025, indicating an emerging threat landscape that necessitates heightened security responses.
