In a recent announcement, West Bengal’s Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development, Dilip Ghosh, stated that the state government is determined to shut down madrasas operating without the necessary government permissions. This decision comes amidst a broader evaluation of Islamic educational institutions in West Bengal.

Ghosh asserted that institutions wishing to continue their operations must secure the requisite approvals from government authorities to comply with existing regulations. During a press conference, Ghosh emphasised the importance of adhering to legal frameworks, stating, “Anything illegal will not be tolerated. Operations cannot continue where government permission has not been granted.”

His comments followed the issuance of closure notices to 252 madrasas in the state as part of the ongoing review process, which aims to regulate such institutions more stringently. According to Ghosh, the concerns surrounding madrasas have been longstanding, with issues raised over the past two decades regarding their functioning. He noted that various leaders have previously highlighted the potential problems associated with these institutions, although no viable solutions had been proposed until now.

Claims of Terrorism Linked to Madrasa Edu

Ghosh also made alarming statements concerning the involvement of some madrasa educators in terrorist activities within West Bengal. He suggested that these educational institutions may have served as havens for individuals entering the state from Bangladesh with terrorist intentions.

However, his allegations were not substantiated with specific details or evidence during the interaction with the press. These assertions reflect a growing concern among security agencies regarding the role of madrasas in the context of regional safety. Nevertheless, any claims regarding terrorism require rigorous investigation and verification by law enforcement agencies to ascertain their accuracy.

This scrutiny of madrasas, coupled with the closure notices, has reignited discussions on the regulatory frameworks governing educational institutions in West Bengal. The government aims to ensure compliance with laws while safeguarding the integrity of the education system.

CM Suvendu Adhikari Highlights Infra Progress

Amidst these developments, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also addressed the media, focussing on significant infrastructure projects in the state. He revealed that notable advancements have been made over the past four months, with multiple investment initiatives underway. Among these is a project valued at Rs 15,000 crore aimed at bolstering the state’s economic framework.

Adhikari highlighted a commitment of Rs 700 crore for a project in Gangoni, as well as a new Rs 600 crore Amul facility, stating, “In the last four months, we have witnessed considerable progress on major projects.” These investments reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and stimulate economic growth within West Bengal.

Additionally, Adhikari discussed innovative initiatives such as the development of a robotic firefighting system designed for areas where traditional fire rescue apparatus may face challenges. This technology aims to enhance emergency responses in locations that are difficult to access, showcasing the government’s focus on utilising advanced solutions for safety and emergency management.

As the West Bengal government continues to face scrutiny regarding the operation and regulation of educational institutions, developments in infrastructure and investment remain a key focus, underscoring its dual approach to governance and community safety.
