Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella has said the pursuit of superintelligent artificial intelligence must remain focused on benefiting humanity and ensuring that humans retain control over the technology.

In a post on X, Nadella said AI should not be pursued if it fails to serve humanity or cannot be kept under human control. He also called for the benefits of artificial intelligence to be spread more rapidly across countries, communities and companies.

Human Control Central To AI Development

Nadella said the development of increasingly advanced AI must be guided by clear principles around human benefit and control.

He said that if the technology being developed did not help humanity or could not remain under human control, it was “not worth pursuing”.

Nadella also said Microsoft supported the research, focus and “deliberate pacing” required to make AI alignment a core design objective.

He welcomed proposals such as “embedded evaluators” and wider efforts to develop practical mechanisms capable of translating AI safety principles into real-world systems.

His comments placed AI alignment and human oversight at the centre of the debate over the development of superintelligent systems.

Nadella Calls For Broad Access To AI

Nadella said the AI ecosystem should be designed to allow both closed and open-source models to develop and compete.

He argued that organisations should retain control over their own unique and tacit knowledge rather than becoming dependent on a single provider of AI models.

“Every organisation should be able to build its own continuous learning loophill climbing machine,” Nadella said.

He added that companies should be able to embed their own knowledge into AI models and weights that remain under their control.

Nadella described Microsoft’s broader approach as one based on “broad access and choice at every layer of the AI stack”, combined with enterprise control over learning loops and models.

Warning Against AI Control By A Few Entities

Nadella also argued that the development and direction of advanced AI should not be concentrated in the hands of a small number of organisations.

He called for broader representation across the AI ecosystem, countries and disciplines, including academia.

“The key is that this cannot be controlled by a handful of entities,” he said.

Nadella’s comments highlighted Microsoft’s position that access to advanced AI should extend across different countries, communities and organisations rather than being dominated by a limited group of companies or institutions.

He also said Microsoft would publish a “Code of Conduct” underpinning its first-party MAI models for public consultation the following day.
