Delhi High Court Grants Interim Relief to Mohanlal, Expands Personality Rights Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Friday, the Delhi High Court indicated its intent to issue interim measures to protect the personality rights of renowned Malayalam actor Mohanlal. The case was overseen by Justice Jyoti Singh, who consented to the actor’s request to incorporate new defendants into his ongoing legal action.

This development follows a previous court session where Mohanlal was allowed to retract an earlier interim petition, with the possibility of resubmitting it accompanied by more comprehensive details. Acting on this opportunity, the actor has now sought the court’s approval with a revised application.

Clarification on Allegations

During the recent hearings, the court instructed Mohanlal to provide a detailed catalog of the allegedly infringing links related to the defendants. This instruction aims to create a clear understanding of the specific instances when his personality rights are purportedly infringed upon.

The court has addressed several similar cases involving the unauthorized usage of identities of public figures. Previously, it issued a John Doe order to protect the personality rights of various renowned figures, including actor Sonakshi Sinha and yoga instructor Ramdev. Similar protections have also been extended to artists such as Jubin Nautiyal, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, and actors Kajol, R. Madhavan, and Jr NTR. Notably, actor Salman Khan has filed a comparable request in this context.

Prior Court Rulings and Protecting Public Figures

Court interventions have previously benefited prominent personalities including Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, actor Nagarjuna, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and filmmaker Karan Johar. Recently, journalist Sudhir Chaudhary obtained protection against misleading AI-generated videos circulating on the internet. Additionally, a John Doe order was also granted to podcaster Raj Shamani, emphasizing his prominence in digital media.

Mohanlal’s Upcoming Projects

On the professional front, Mohanlal has a busy schedule ahead. His next film, titled Patriot, directed by Mahesh Narayanan, features notable actors Mammootty and Kunchacko Boban. This political drama represents a rare collaborative effort between Mohanlal and Mammootty, and it is expected to hit theaters on April 23, 2026. He is also engaged in an unnamed venture, L366, directed by Tharun Moorthy, which is currently in production. Another significant project, Drishyam 3, directed by Jeethu Joseph, is set to continue the popular narrative of Georgekutty, with Meena, Ansiba Hassan, and Esther Anil reprising their roles. This film is targeting a release date of May 21, 2026.

In addition to these projects, Mohanlal is connected to Ram, a film that has been in development since the pandemic and is still awaiting its theatrical debut, along with other ventures yet to be announced.
