Cristiano Ronaldo Provisionally Suspended by Portugal After Leaving National Team Camp

The CSR Journal Magazine

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following his departure from the national team camp. The move comes amid ongoing disciplinary proceedings initiated after Ronaldo left ahead of Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark. The FPF confirmed this development on Saturday, stating the case has been referred to its Disciplinary Investigation Commission, which has classified it as urgent.

According to the FPF, an additional suspension came after the provisional suspension, although specifics about the proceedings will remain confidential until completion. The federation’s statement indicated that the Non-Professional Section decided to take action against Ronaldo on October 9, 2026. As of now, the national team has yet to announce a final decision regarding any punishment.

Ronaldo Accepts Responsibility for His Actions

In response to the situation, Ronaldo publicly apologised to his teammates and supporters in Portugal, expressing that his departure warranted disciplinary consequences. He emphasized that, as captain, he recognises the importance of accountability and stated that the FPF should determine the appropriate sanctions.

Ronaldo’s remarks included a call for the federation to judiciously assess the repercussions of his actions, affirming that his status should not exempt him from potential penalties. The controversy emerged after Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway, during which Ronaldo remained an unused substitute. He claims that head coach Jorge Jesus had assured him of 30 minutes of playtime, a point which the coach has disputed.

Despite the ongoing disciplinary proceedings, Ronaldo expressed his unwavering commitment to the national team and indicated he would accept any suspension imposed. His intention to address the issue maturely has been evident through his statements in recent days.

Ronaldo Returns to Club Action with Al-Nassr

Following the controversy with the national team, Ronaldo resumed club activities at Al-Nassr, where he notably scored in a recent match against Diriyah. He was instrumental in securing a 3-0 victory in the Saudi Pro League, marking an important contribution to his team’s performance. According to reports, this goal was to bring his career total to 980.

Ronaldo’s involvement in the match saw him capitalise on a rebound after goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah parried Kingsley Coman’s shot, allowing the forward to score from close range. Following this victory, Al-Nassr finds itself level on points with Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Qadsiah, with goal difference determining their relative standings after eight rounds.

As Ronaldo awaits the outcome of the FPF’s ongoing investigation, his future participation with the national team remains uncertain. The disciplinary proceedings will ultimately influence any potential re-integration into the squad for upcoming fixtures.
