Delhi Government Crackdown: 1,046 Illegal Properties Targeted After Fatal Building Collapse

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi government has initiated action against 1,046 properties deemed illegal or unsafe, following a tragic building collapse in Satya Niketan on September 6. This incident resulted in the death of seven individuals and spurred the authorities into enhanced vigilance. The campaign, which intensified between September 6 and October 10, targeted properties across all twelve zones governed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed the MCD to expedite its operations in response to the incident. The MCD’s Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) reported that an average of approximately 30 properties were addressed daily during this enforcement period, indicating a robust response to safety concerns associated with urban constructions.

Details of Properties Affected

During the enforcement campaign, authorities sealed 282 properties and demolished 47 buildings assessed to be dangerous. The largest number of properties targeted was in Rohini, with 158 cases recorded. Other zones included South Delhi with 121, and Shahdara North with 115 reported cases. Notably, the West, City-Sadar Paharganj, and Shahdara South zones each had 87 properties under scrutiny, while Karol Bagh reported 85, and Central 75.

Furthermore, Keshavpuram had 61 properties marked, while Narela showed 62. Najafgarh accounted for 45 properties in similar situations. In terms of the sealing process, the City-SP zone led with 87 properties, followed by 41 in Shahdara North and 27 in Shahdara South. Other areas, such as Keshavpuram and Central, also had notable figures in terms of sealed properties.

The demolition efforts highlighted Karol Bagh as the zone with the highest number, with 13 demolitions performed. West, Civil Lines, and City-Sadar Paharganj recorded eight demolitions each. Other zones exhibited varying levels of activity, with one or two demolitions reported in several areas; however, Shahdara North and Central did not register any demolitions.

Continued Efforts and Future Actions

The enforcement actions were not solely reactive to the Satya Niketan incident. Following a further building collapse in Seemapuri that resulted in five fatalities, local authorities took swift measures by demolishing an unsafe structure in that area as well. In addition, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board has taken the initiative to send notices to three other hazardous houses in a bid to mitigate risks.

Chief Minister Gupta announced that the ongoing campaign against illegal constructions and hazardous buildings would persist throughout Delhi, ensuring that safety regulations are adhered to without being limited to specific localities. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance compliance with building codes and significantly reduce the potential for future accidents within the region.

The significant enforcement drive illustrates the government’s commitment to addressing the pressing issue of urban safety. The action taken reflects a concerted effort to manage illegal construction practices within the city while ensuring public safety through the regulation of building standards, marking a proactive stance against potential urban hazards.
