Imran Khan Waves Jai Hind At Mumbai Police After Protest Detention

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Imran Khan made headlines after reportedly being detained during a protest in Mumbai on Saturday. The incident drew significant attention on social media, particularly due to a video that features Khan waving at police officers and exclaiming “Jai Hind!” as they departed the scene. This clip was shared by protester Lalit Sharma, who is identified as a Bombay High Court lawyer on Instagram.

Tensions Among Protesters and Police

An additional video showcases Khan engaged in a fraught exchange with police personnel. Officers appeared to form a human chain to impede his exit, while Khan’s girlfriend, Lekha Washington, and cousin, Zayn Marie Khan, captured the interaction on their phones, urging the officers to produce a warrant or necessary documentation. The tension surrounding the scene drew eye-catching reactions online.

Following the incident, Khan, along with Washington and Zayn, was released. In a separate video, the actor expressed confusion about the reasons for his arrest. He stated, “I honestly don’t know why I have been brought here. They picked us all off the streets. They said gaadi mein baitho (sit in the van).” Khan also mentioned that he initially thought the police vehicle would be luxurious, suggesting the excitement was misplaced.

He further claimed that he and others were transported in a police van for roughly two hours before being dropped off at an undisclosed location. Washington added in another clip that they were not given the opportunity to take a cab after their release, underlining their discontent with the situation.

Background of the Protest in Mumbai

Khan was among over 400 individuals detained by the Mumbai Police during an anti-Chief Election Commissioner protest held at August Kranti Maidan and Nana Chowk. The demonstration was organised by Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, in support of the Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms’ demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The protest was primarily driven by concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and allegations of manipulation in voter lists. Gandhi himself was also detained en route to the protest location but was later released.

The police explained that August Kranti Maidan was not an approved protest venue according to a Bombay High Court ruling, necessitating preventive measures to uphold public order. In addition, authorities deployed extra personnel, including female officers, to Shivaji Park in Dadar to avert further demonstrations, while security measures were intensified across other areas in Mumbai.

Significance of August Kranti Maidan

August Kranti Maidan holds notable historical significance as it was the birthplace of the Quit India Movement in 1942. This adds a layer of depth to the current protests, as the location carries memories of significant past struggles for independence. Residents and activists often invoke its historical weight when addressing contemporary issues related to governance and civic rights.

The Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms has further planned a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to discuss electoral-roll revisions and changes regarding Form 6, which is utilised for voter registration. The atmosphere surrounding these events suggests a growing concern among citizens regarding electoral integrity and governance.
