On Sunday, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the tanker Mt Petro Dolphin, which was carrying 11 Indian seafarers, fell victim to a drone attack at Sohar Anchorage in Oman. This incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of maritime operations in the region.

Rescue Efforts Underway

The minister confirmed that nine out of the eleven crew members were successfully rescued and are currently safe. However, two Indian nationals remain unaccounted for, prompting intensive search efforts. The local Coast Guard has reportedly initiated search-and-rescue operations to locate the missing individuals.

Minister Sonowal expressed that the Indian government is in close coordination with relevant authorities in Oman to provide full support in the ongoing rescue efforts. The primary objective remains to locate and ensure the safety of the two missing personnel.

Further details on the capabilities of the Coast Guard involved in these operations have yet to be disclosed. Reports indicate that the authorities are employing various resources to facilitate a thorough search in the affected area.

Government Stresses Vigilance and Support

Minister Sonowal highlighted that the Indian government is committed to monitoring the situation closely. The shipping community is advised to be vigilant during these tumultuous times. He reaffirmed that all necessary actions are being taken to ensure the welfare of Indian nationals overseas.

In light of the incident, there has been an increase in discussions around maritime security, especially concerning the safety of vessels operating in potentially hostile environments. The Indian government has emphasised its dedication to safeguarding its citizens and commercial interests abroad.

As the situation develops, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs is expected to provide further updates and support for the families of the seafarers involved. This incident underscores ongoing concerns surrounding shipping safety and the need for improved protections against such attacks.
