Heartwarming Gesture: Restaurant Owner Gifts BMWs to Employees Facing Hardship

The CSR Journal Magazine

A restaurant owner in China has claimed attention by gifting brand-new BMWs to her most diligent employees, motivated by her observations of their struggles during winter commutes. Ma Yanli, who manages a beef hotpot restaurant chain based in Jiaozuo, Henan province, presented the cars to her staff on September 24. This initiative reflects her commitment to acknowledging the efforts of her team, particularly in adverse weather conditions.

Each BMW was valued at 300,000 yuan, equating to around Rs 43 lakh. Ma reportedly paid for the vehicles in full approximately two weeks prior to the memorable handover event. Employees were notified about their surprises while being transported to the dealership, where they received the cars without any financial obligations or contracts, enhancing the surprise element of this generous act.

One recipient, Li Jie, expressed her astonishment upon receiving the vehicle. She reflected on how Ma had described it as a “big toy” during their journey to collect the car. Li, who has dedicated eight years to the restaurant, typically commuted via an electric scooter, braving freezing conditions to fulfil her duties.

Ma Yanli’s Motivation Behind the Gifts

Ma Yanli’s inspiration for this unique gesture stemmed from witnessing an employee’s struggle against the harsh winter climate. On one particularly frigid day, Ma noted Li’s arrival at work, visibly affected by the cold, with a flushed complexion and numbed extremities. This sight prompted Ma to reflect on the conveniences she enjoyed and to consider the wellbeing of her employees.

Having spent two decades in the catering sector, Ma believes that the success of her business is a collective achievement. This belief informed her decision to provide significant rewards to her team, ensuring they reaped the benefits of their hard work. Thus, the BMWs served not just as tokens of achievement, but also as symbols of appreciation for their commitment.

Besides the BMWs, other employees, like Liu Yingying, also received gifts. Liu was presented with a grey BMW, and Ma reportedly emphasised that it was deserved recognition for her diligence and excellent performance. This reaffirmation of hard work illustrates the positive work environment Ma has cultivated over the years.

Wider Trends of Generosity in Chinese Workplaces

This act of generosity comes amid a wider trend in China where employers are gaining attention for recognising and rewarding their staff. For instance, Cui Peijun, chairman of the Henan Kuangshan Crane Company, has reportedly given away substantial bonuses to his workforce, totalling 180 million yuan ahead of the Spring Festival in 2025. His contributions include cash incentives for female employees on International Women’s Day and annual subsidies for workers from rural areas.

Ma Yanli’s approach, however, stands out for its personal touch, stemming from her concern for an employee’s comfort. Her decision to provide BMWs exemplifies a significant shift towards prioritising employee welfare and establishing a culture of appreciation. It highlights how altruistic actions can foster goodwill within the workplace, subsequently enhancing morale and productivity.

Through such initiatives, Ma illustrates a growing recognition in China of the importance of rewarding employee loyalty and hard work. Her actions may inspire other employers to reflect on their own practices in nurturing and valuing their teams as integral to organisational success.
