The Delhi government is set to strengthen its ‘No PUCC, No Fuel’ policy aimed at mitigating pollution levels in the city. This decision was announced following a meeting led by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav. The meeting included significant participation from Delhi officials, namely Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma, along with Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

During the discussions, the participants addressed action-oriented plans concerning pollution control in both Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). Sirsa noted that the collaborative efforts were focused on determining the roles each jurisdiction would play in reducing pollution levels efficiently.

Sirsa emphasised the need for rigorous strategies to achieve their objectives and reiterated the government’s commitment to these initiatives, noting that current measures would be bolstered to ensure a cleaner environment.

Implementation Of Deep Cleaning Programme

As part of the pollution control strategy, the government plans to implement a fortnightly deep cleaning programme across Delhi’s roads. Sirsa explained that the initiative aims to eliminate soil and dust accumulation, contributing to improved air quality and overall hygiene in public spaces.

Each cleaning team will consist of four personnel per vehicle, including representatives from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Collaboration with the Delhi Police is also part of the plan to enhance operational effectiveness and community coordination during the cleaning processes.

Moreover, Sirsa introduced the concept of “heating spots” to offer assistance during the colder months. Temporary shelters will be established, outfitted with heating provisions to ensure that residents can find refuge from the chilly weather.

Expansion Of Electric Bus Fleet And Addressing Pollution Hotspots

In a continued effort to tackle air pollution and traffic congestion, the Delhi government is expanding its fleet of electric buses. Currently, 588 electric buses are in service, with a plan to add an additional 150 buses, signalling a commitment to greener public transport.

Sirsa outlined a comprehensive strategy to address ongoing pollution challenges at specific hotspots around the city. As part of this initiative, he is visiting the offices of all 11 District Magistrates to conduct reviews of pollution-causing activities situated within a 3-kilometre radius of identified hotspots.

Focus will be given to areas such as cremation grounds, dumping yards, and construction and demolition sites, thus working closely with District Magistrates to streamline pollution management efforts and improve air quality in these critical regions.

Green Initiatives And Progress On Pollution Control

Sirsa also discussed the development of “brown patches” alongside road edges as part of a public engagement campaign to promote greenery and mitigate soil and dust dispersion. This initiative aims to involve community members in fostering environmentally-friendly practices.

According to recent reports, pollution levels at 42 out of the 62 identified pollution hotspots have been successfully managed, demonstrating the effectiveness of current measures. The government continues to work diligently on the remaining hotspots, focusing on strategies to maintain air quality improvements.

Through ongoing initiatives, including the deep cleaning process already in motion, Delhi authorities aim to address environmental challenges comprehensively and involve the public in collaborative efforts towards a cleaner city.
