Nishad Kumar Achieves Historic Double Gold at Asian Para Games 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

Nishad Kumar made history at the Asian Para Games 2026 by winning his second gold medal in as many days, becoming only the third Indian to secure two golds in a single edition of this prestigious event. On Tuesday, he clinched the men’s high jump T47 title with a record-setting jump of 2.04m in Aichi-Nagoya. This achievement follows his gold medal victory in the men’s long jump T47 event, where he recorded a best jump of 7.11m the previous day.

With this impressive performance, Nishad joins an elite group of Indian athletes, including Ankur Dhama and armless archer Sheetal Devi, who also won two gold medals at the 2023 Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou, China. Dhama secured titles in the men’s 5000m T11 and 1500m T11 events, while Sheetal excelled in the women’s individual compound open and mixed team compound open categories.

Record-Breaking Performance in High Jump

Nishad Kumar, primarily known for his high jump abilities, showcased his versatility by adding the long jump title to his accolades before returning to his speciality. His clearance of 2.04m not only earned him the gold medal but also established a new Games record in the men’s high jump T47 category, which is designated for athletes with upper-limb impairments.

This achievement further solidifies his status as a leading athlete in para-sports. This latest victory adds to Nishad’s already impressive career, which includes a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics and a world championship gold in the high jump. His journey has been characterised by remarkable resilience.

It is particularly after a life-altering incident at the age of six when he lost his right arm due to a grass-cutting machine accident on his family’s farm in Amb, Himachal Pradesh. Nishad’s accomplishments are a testament to his dedication and hard work, inspiring many within and beyond the sporting community. His ability to excel in multiple disciplines highlights his exceptional talent and commitment to the sport.

Recognition from PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Nishad Kumar following his gold medal win in the long jump, emphasising the significance of this achievement on his debut at the Asian Para Games. In a statement shared by PMO India, the Prime Minister expressed pride in Nishad’s accomplishments, stating, “Winning a Gold on his debut in this event makes the achievement even more special. His versatility, determination, and sporting excellence are truly inspiring.”

This recognition from the Prime Minister underscores the importance of Nishad’s achievements in promoting para-sports in India. The Prime Minister’s message came after Nishad’s impressive performance in the long jump final, where he recorded jumps of 7.11m on two occasions. With two gold medals and a new Games record, Nishad has emerged as one of the standout athletes in Aichi-Nagoya, drawing attention to the potential of Indian athletes in the realm of para-sports.

As the Asian Para Games 2026 continues, Nishad Kumar’s achievements serve as a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes and a reminder of the remarkable capabilities of individuals with disabilities. His success is a significant milestone for Indian sports, particularly in the context of the growing recognition and support for para-athletes in the country.
