Bihar CM Samrat Choudhary Faces Challenge in Eight MLC Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is set to face a significant political challenge as elections for eight Legislative Council seats approach on October 23. This election will serve as a crucial test for both the electoral prospects of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and its internal cohesion, particularly given the ongoing disputes within the Janata Dal (United) regarding the Patna Graduate constituency. The elections will encompass four Graduate and four Teachers’ constituencies, marking Choudhary’s second major political challenge since he assumed office in the BJP-led government.

In addition to competing against candidates from the Opposition, Choudhary must ensure that the various constituents of the NDA collaborate effectively in support of the alliance’s official nominees. The importance of this election is heightened following the BJP’s recent defeat in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll, where Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor emerged victorious against BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar. Kishor’s win, with 64,151 votes compared to Kumar’s 44,827, has been interpreted as a referendum on Choudhary’s leadership and the popularity of his administration.

The outcome of the Legislative Council elections on October 23 will likely draw scrutiny regarding Choudhary’s capability to navigate both electoral competition and the internal differences within the ruling coalition.

Internal Disputes Within the NDA

As the elections draw near, internal disagreements have surfaced within the NDA, particularly concerning two constituencies, which raises concerns about the alliance’s ability to maintain effective coordination. The first point of contention is the Saran Teachers’ constituency, where Ram Pukar Sinha, a leader from the Upendra Kushwaha-led Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), has chosen to run as an Independent against the NDA’s official candidate, Anand Pushkar. Following Sinha’s decision, Kushwaha suspended him from the party for six years. Despite this, Sinha later declared his intention to support Pushkar during the campaign.

However, since the deadline for withdrawing nominations has passed, Sinha’s name will remain on the ballot, introducing an element of uncertainty in the Saran contest. The situation has created a complex dynamic that the NDA must navigate as it seeks to secure a victory in this constituency.

The situation is further complicated in the Patna Graduate constituency, where public disagreements within the JD(U) have come to light. The JD(U) has nominated Neeraj Kumar as its official candidate, but Anant Singh, the party’s MLA from Mokama, has been actively campaigning for Jan Suraaj candidate Anuj Kumar Singh instead. This internal conflict has highlighted divisions within the JD(U) and poses a significant challenge for the NDA, which is striving for unity among its constituents.

Health Concerns of JD(U) Candidate

The political landscape in Patna has been further complicated by the health issues faced by JD(U) candidate Neeraj Kumar. He was admitted to hospital just two days before Choudhary’s scheduled visit. During his visit, the Chief Minister instructed that Kumar receive enhanced medical care. Kumar’s hospitalisation raises concerns about his ability to campaign effectively during the critical final phase of the election.

Simultaneously, Anant Singh has continued to campaign for Anuj Kumar Singh, thereby keeping the internal discord within the JD(U) at the forefront of public attention. These developments have made the Patna Graduate constituency one of the most closely monitored contests in the upcoming elections. The NDA faces not only the challenge of presenting a strong candidate against the Opposition but also the potential complications arising from internal dissent.

The elections on October 23 will require Choudhary to tackle dual challenges: countering the opposition candidates while ensuring that NDA leaders and workers present a united front in support of the alliance’s official nominees. The results will be counted on October 27, marking significant dates for the Bihar Chief Minister and the NDA coalition.
