Delhi Government Plans Onion and Sugar Procurement to Control Prices

A review meeting was conducted on Tuesday regarding the availability and pricing of onions and sugar in Delhi, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The meeting confirmed that there is currently no shortage of either item in the capital. However, it was noted that if prices continue to rise, the Delhi government aims to shield residents from increased costs.

The Chief Minister’s Office indicated that, in the event of rising prices, the government will procure onions and sugar from the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED), a central government entity. These products will be distributed at various locations throughout the capital based on procurement prices from NAFED. The Delhi government will cover transportation and associated expenses.

Measures are being implemented to monitor the supply of onions entering Delhi to ensure they reach the market efficiently and to prevent hoarding. The Food and Supplies Minister, Sardar Manjinder Singh Sirsa, along with senior department officials, participated in the meeting.

In anticipation of potential price increases, the Chief Minister instructed the department to develop a comprehensive action plan. This may include setting up camps across Delhi to provide affordable onions to residents.

Sirsa emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing any financial burden on Delhi residents due to potential hikes in onion prices. He reiterated that the price at which onions are sold will be determined by NAFED’s pricing.

The Food and Supplies Minister also mentioned that the central government has established regulations to deter the hoarding of sugar. The Delhi government intends to enforce these regulations, and any locations found hoarding excess quantities of sugar will face action. Additionally, the department has been tasked with exploring options to supply sugar at affordable rates and is required to submit a detailed plan for this initiative.
