Death Toll Reaches 16 in Kolkata Godown Shed Collapse on Day Four, Search Operation On

The recent collapse of a multi-storey godown shed in the Taratala area of Kolkata has resulted in a death toll of 16, as confirmed by officials. The incident occurred on June 25 near Brace Bridge, tragically trapping numerous workers under the wreckage. Emergency teams were swiftly deployed to the site to conduct rescue operations, aiming to locate and save those trapped beneath the debris.

According to data released by Kolkata Police, 33 individuals were impacted by the incident, among which 16 have lost their lives, while 17 others sustained injuries and were subsequently hospitalised. Regular updates on the condition of the injured have indicated that four individuals were discharged on June 26 following medical treatment.

The victims have been identified and include individuals ranging from teenagers to those in their fifties. A comprehensive list provides names such as Rahul Chowdhury (17), Krishna Chowdhury (49), and Asgar Hussain (54), among others. Unidentified victims, allegedly in their forties, were also reported.

Official Response and Investigations Underway

In the wake of this disaster, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that immediate actions have commenced. A total of six individuals have been apprehended in relation to the incident, with the Lalbazar Crime Branch conducting an investigation under the oversight of the Kolkata Police Commissioner. The Chief Minister confirmed that accountability measures are being implemented to address this unfortunate occurrence.

Additionally, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) plans to blacklist the architect or planner associated with the under-construction structure. CM Adhikari underscored the significance of rigorous administrative and legal steps against all those implicated in the situation, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring safety and compliance in construction projects.

The response from local authority figures demonstrates a proactive approach in dealing with the aftermath of the incident. Investigations aim to understand the causes behind the collapse to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

While acknowledging the tragedy, he pointed out that thorough soil testing and recommendations from geotechnical engineers are integral steps in determining the structural integrity of a project. The standards typically employed by CREDAI members ensure that high-rise constructions withstand extreme conditions, including seismic activity.

Mohta shed light on the contrast between professional construction practices and the operations of unofficial contractors. According to him, illegal constructions often arise from inadequate supervision and the use of substandard materials, which can lead to catastrophic results, as evidenced by the incident in Taratala.
