Congress Leader Pawan Khera Questions GDP Growth Amid Job Concerns

Congress leader Pawan Khera has sharply critiqued Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statements regarding India’s reported 7.8 per cent GDP growth during the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year. Khera expressed his concerns about the implications of this economic growth for job creation and opportunities for young people in the country.

In response to the Prime Minister’s post on X, Khera stated that describing the reported growth as an “economic spring” is misleading. He emphasised that a single quarter of 7.8 per cent growth does not indicate a sustained or robust economic environment. “One quarter of 7.8% growth is not an economic spring,” he remarked in his social media update.

Khera further questioned the government’s assertions of economic progress by pointing out the ongoing issues of unemployment and the education system. He asked why such problems, including the prevalence of examination paper leaks, persist if the economy is truly thriving. “If India has truly ‘bloomed,’ why do rampant unemployment, leaked exam papers, and a crumbling education system define the ground reality?” he queried on X.

Additionally, Khera expressed his scepticism regarding the government’s ability to transform economic growth into tangible benefits for the nation’s population. He remarked, “GDP measures national output—not jobs, not wages, not opportunity. If it measured any of those, the future of India’s youth would not look so bleak.” He further criticised the Prime Minister by posing the persistent question for Indian youth: “Where are the jobs?”

These comments come on the heels of Prime Minister Modi’s remarks, wherein he celebrated India’s 7.8 per cent GDP growth during the first quarter of the financial year. He described this achievement as a “herculean feat,” highlighting that the economic growth occurred despite challenges such as fluctuating oil prices, supply chain disruptions, and uncertainties in the global economy.

In his social media message, PM Modi noted that the strong economic performance is a testament to the collective strength of the Indian populace. He stated, “India’s exemplary GDP growth of 7.8 per cent during Q1 of FY 2026-27 is a herculean feat.” Modi attributed the growth to the resilience of the Indian people, asserting that such success was achieved despite significant global challenges.
