Congress MP Pawan Khera recently claimed that the Indian government has acted in an “anti-Constitution” manner, leading to widespread disenfranchisement of voters through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. During a press conference held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on September 25, he underscored the importance of equal vote value as emphasised by the Constitution’s framers, particularly Dr B.R. Ambedkar. Khera accused the current leadership of creating divisions among voters, categorising them into “VIPs” and ordinary citizens.

Khera’s statements come in the context of a heated dispute involving the functionality of the Election Commission. He referenced Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s recent claims about alleged electoral malpractice. Khera asserted that more than 13 crore voters have allegedly been disenfranchised nationally, signalling a significant concern regarding the integrity of the electoral process.

The Congress leader alluded to a previously classified mission involving Gyanesh Gupta, asserting that this mission had now entered the public domain. Khera expressed that the actions of certain officials had led to the revelation of what he referred to as their “secret game.” This statement fuels the ongoing discussion on procedural irregularities linked to the electoral revision process.

The press conference coincides with growing political unrest regarding the Election Commission’s conduct. Following the revelations, the Congress party launched protests across multiple Indian states, calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Party activists demanded accountability for alleged mismanagement of the electoral rolls, reflecting broader concerns about the integrity of upcoming elections.

Amid these protests, Congress Uttar Pradesh in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam condemned the Election Commission for failing its constitutional mandate to ensure free and fair elections. He claimed that the actions of the Election Commission amounted to treason against the nation, emphasising that their authority derives solely from the Constitution and not from any political party.

Gaurav Gogoi, the Assam Congress president, was reportedly detained by police during a demonstration on the same day. He reiterated calls for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and advocated for legal consequences regarding what he alleged were serious irregularities. Gogoi labelled Kumar’s actions as a betrayal and stated that not only he but other influential figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, should be held accountable.

Election Commission’s Response and Internal Dynamics

In the wake of the accusations and protests, the Election Commission has issued a statement dismissing claims of institutional dissent. Officials clarified that internal disagreements within a multi-member constitutional body are standard and should not be seen as indicative of broader discord. They maintained that all significant decisions related to the SIR process were taken unanimously, thereby asserting the legitimacy of their actions.

This ongoing situation highlights the contentious political atmosphere surrounding the Election Commission as multiple opposition parties rally against it. The Congress party’s organised protests reflect a strategy aimed at spotlighting what they view as critical shortcomings in electoral governance.
