China, as UN Security Council President, Seeks Review of UNIFIL Mission in Southern Lebanon

The CSR Journal Magazine

The People’s Republic of China has officially taken on the rotating Presidency of the United Nations Security Council for May, an announcement made by Fu Cong, the Permanent Representative of China to the UN, on May 2, 2026. In his capacity as the new President, Fu expressed pride in this role and acknowledged the work previously undertaken by Bahrain in the preceding month.

Fu Cong indicated that one of the significant issues China aims to address during its presidency is the future of the United Nations peacekeeping operation stationed in southern Lebanon. His statements highlighted the importance of this mission and suggested that a reassessment of recent decisions concerning UNIFIL would be pertinent.

Call for Reassessment of UNIFIL’s Mission

In his remarks, Fu Cong noted the need to “revisit the decision” to withdraw UNIFIL, which is grounded in a resolution passed by the UN Security Council in August of the previous year. This development marked a turning point for the peacekeeping mission, which has been active since Israel’s military incursion into Lebanon in 1978.

According to the resolution, which received the backing of all 15 Council members, the mission is set to conclude by the end of 2026, a timeline that Fu argues may need reconsideration. He asserted that it is not an opportune moment for UNIFIL to be withdrawn from southern Lebanon, stating that the majority of Security Council members likely share this viewpoint.

China is currently awaiting an essential report from the UN Secretariat, anticipated in June. This report is expected to inform China’s official stance on the issue of UNIFIL and its future operations in the region.

Background on UNIFIL Operations

Established primarily to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli forces following their 1978 invasion of Lebanon, UNIFIL has seen its mandate evolve over the decades. After the 2006 conflict between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, the UN’s role expanded significantly, necessitating the creation of a demilitarised buffer zone between the two factions.

UNIFIL’s mission has been pivotal in maintaining peace and stability in a region characterised by complex geopolitical tensions. Its presence has enabled the monitoring of ceasefires and the facilitation of humanitarian efforts. However, the prospect of altering its operational status continues to be a focal point of discussion among international representatives.

In concluding his address, Fu Cong reiterated China’s commitment to fairness and transparency during its presidency of the Security Council. He expressed a determination to work collaboratively with other member states to promote peace and security on a global scale, thereby reinforcing the Council’s ability to manage international crises effectively.
