The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 PM inside a boiler unit, triggering a massive emergency response and highlighting serious concerns over industrial safety.

Eyewitnesses reported a powerful blast that caused significant damage within the facility. Local authorities, including district police and health officials, rushed to the site to coordinate rescue and relief operations. Injured workers were transported to hospitals in nearby Raigarh district, including Jindal Hospital and the Medical College, where they are undergoing treatment.

Casualties Rise As Rescue Efforts Continue

President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, offering condolences and prayers for the bereaved families. PM Modi also conveyed his grief and announced ex-gratia compensation from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, with Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Investigation Underway Amid Safety Concerns

An investigation into the cause of the explosion has been initiated, with officials coordinating closely with Vedanta plant management. Preliminary reports suggest possible lapses in safety protocols, though a detailed inquiry is underway to establish accountability.

A spokesperson for the Vedanta power plant confirmed that the incident involved personnel from subcontractor NGSL and stated that the company’s immediate focus is on ensuring medical assistance for the injured while fully cooperating with investigators.

Officials have been visiting the site to assess the damage and review safety compliance. Regulatory bodies are expected to intensify scrutiny of industrial safety standards across similar plants in the region.

The incident has sparked widespread concern over worker safety, with calls for stricter enforcement of safety norms, better training, and regular equipment checks. As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to outline further measures to prevent such tragedies in the future while continuing support for affected families.
