The New York Indian Film Festival 2026 celebrated Indian independent cinema, concluding its four-day event with an awards ceremony that recognised talent across ten competitive categories. Held from May 28 to May 31, the festival highlighted films from 15 different Indian languages. A special screening of the Manipuri film Boong took place on May 29, marking the festival’s opening. Boong has gained recognition beyond the festival, recently becoming the first Indian film to win an award at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards, securing the title of Best Children’s and Family Film. The narrative centres on a schoolboy named Boong, who embarks on a journey to find his absent father in the conflict-affected region of Manipur, all while wishing to surprise his mother. This poignant tale explores themes of love, discrimination, and belonging as the protagonist faces various challenges.

This film is produced by Excel Entertainment and features performances by Gugun Kipgen and Bala Hijam. Boong had a limited theatrical release initially in September 2024, but following its recognition at the BAFTA awards, it was re-released on March 6 to a wider audience.
