Bomb Threats Target Schools, Flights, and Secretariat in Chandigarh

The CSR Journal Magazine

On April 16, 2023, multiple educational institutions, two Air India flights, and the Chandigarh Secretariat received bomb threat emails, prompting an immediate response from local law enforcement. The schools that reportedly received these threats include St Soldier International School in Sector 45, Ryan International School in Sector 49, Ajit Karam Singh International Public School, Saupin’s School in Sector 32, St. John’s School in Sector 26, Kundana International School, Shivalik Public School, Vivek High School in Sector 38, and Delhi Public School in Sector 40.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigations

In reaction to the threats, Chandigarh Police initiated extensive search operations at all targeted educational campuses. According to police statements, no suspicious items have been discovered so far, and the search efforts are continuing. Authorities are maintaining a vigilant stance as they reassess security protocols in light of these incidents.

This series of events follows an alarming email received on April 6, which threatened multiple bomb blasts across key locations in Chandigarh. This earlier communication specifically named various sites, including the office of the Mayor, the Secretariat, Chandigarh University, and several schools. The email detailed alleged timings for the attacks, positing that schools may be targeted at 1:11 pm, the Mayor’s office at 2:11 pm, and the Secretariat at 3:11 pm. Furthermore, it included a direct warning of a grenade attack aimed at Chandigarh University’s Gandhi Bhavan at 9:11 pm the same evening.

Authorities are currently investigating both instances, as the attacks are perceived as coordinated threats against not just educational centres but also government locations. The email’s threatening language referenced broader regional tensions, expressing a specific hostility towards the government.

Context and Previous Threats

This recent wave of bomb threats in Chandigarh adds to a troubling pattern of security issues affecting the city. Only days earlier, on April 1, a similar threat was directed at the office of Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, which was sent to the Mayor’s official email address. This earlier correspondence led to increased security measures being implemented across the national capital to ensure the safety of public officials and citizens alike.

The language used in these emails raises concerns regarding public safety and highlights ongoing societal tensions. Authorities have proactively sought to reassure the public by redirecting attention to the robustness of their response systems in confronting such threats.

As investigations continue, local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Police are committed to uncovering the source of these threats and ensuring the safety of all citizens within the area.
