BJP Welcomes Nepal’s Ruling Party Chief With Grand Reception

The CSR Journal Magazine

The BJP extended a warm welcome to Rabi Lamichhane, the chief of Nepal’s ruling party, during his visit to the BJP headquarters on Tuesday. This event was marked by the ceremonial shower of rose petals accompanied by traditional dhol beats, exemplifying the importance that the BJP placed on this interaction. The timing of his visit is particularly noteworthy, coming at a moment of heightened tensions between India and Nepal over ongoing territorial disputes under the leadership of Prime Minister Balen Shah.

While the BJP characterised Lamichhane’s visit as a step towards enhancing party-to-party relations, it has also generated speculation regarding its broader diplomatic implications. Observers are questioning whether this engagement could pave the way for improved relations and help mitigate the existing tensions between the two nations.

First Formal Dialogue and Strategic Context

Lamichhane, a former journalist and politician, met with BJP president Nitin Nabin and other senior officials during this significant interaction. This meeting represents the first official dialogue between the BJP and Nepal’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) since the latter assumed power in March 2026, following a youth-led uprising that dethroned the previous government under KP Oli.

The BJP organised this meeting as part of its ‘Know BJP’ initiative. Although it was framed as a purely party-focused engagement, the underlying strategic motives behind Lamichhane’s visit are evident. This dialogue, the first of its kind in approximately three months, appears to be a calculated move by the BJP to establish consistent lines of communication with Nepal’s ruling party at a time when PM Shah has predominantly avoided interactions with foreign delegates.

Notably, the planned visit of Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to Kathmandu was postponed, reflecting the challenges in diplomatic exchanges. Furthermore, PM Shah’s refusal to meet with US Ambassador Sergio Gor in April indicates an intention to maintain neutrality in international relations, avoiding alignment with any major powers including India, the United States, or China.

Underlying Strains in India-Nepal Relations

The increase in tensions between India and Nepal has largely stemmed from the protracted territorial disputes involving Kalapani, Lipulekh Pass, and Limpiyadhura, regions claimed by both nations. The situation escalated recently when India announced routes for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, including one through the Lipulekh Pass, prompting a swift response from Nepal asserting that these areas belonged to them.

India has refuted Nepal’s claims, asserting their basis is not anchored in historical evidence. This region holds strategic significance for India, providing oversight of the approaches near the Tibetan plateau. The recent hardline stance of both PM Shah and the RSP regarding issues like Lipulekh has further strained bilateral relations.

Moreover, the topic of border encroachments has also emerged as a contentious issue. Shah’s comments in his inaugural Parliament address, suggesting that both Nepal and India have engaged in encroachments, have signalled a notable shift from prior inflexible positions, although they have attracted domestic criticism. Historically, Nepalese governments have faced scrutiny for following pro-India foreign policies, contributing to rising anti-India sentiments, particularly among the younger population advocating for a more independent stance.

Lamichhane’s visit serves as an indication that the ruling RSP is eager to keep communication avenues open despite ongoing tensions. It may reflect an inclination from Kathmandu to reassure India of its intentions, underscoring that geographical, cultural, and commercial ties bind the two nations together.
