Bittu Tabahi Discovers Ajnar River in Madhya Pradesh Choked With Garbage Again

The CSR Journal Magazine

Surendra Singh Choudhary, a 20-year-old known as Bittu Tabahi, has reported a disappointing update regarding the Ajnar River in Madhya Pradesh. On Tuesday, he shared a video on Instagram showcasing the river’s current state, which has reverted to being heavily polluted after his extensive cleaning efforts over the past eight months. This stark contrast to the river’s improved condition just weeks ago has left him disheartened.

In the video, Tabahi expressed his frustration, stating that the hard work he had invested in cleaning the river appeared to have been in vain. The river, located in Rajgarh district, was once again littered with plastic bags and various types of waste, undermining his previous achievements.

Community Response and Social Media Reactions

Following the release of his video, Tabahi received an outpouring of support from social media users who commended his dedication and courage. Many expressed their admiration for his relentless efforts to tackle the pollution problem. One user commented on the significant amount of waste visible in the river, urging him not to lose hope despite the setbacks he faces.

Another individual offered practical advice, suggesting that Tabahi invest in appropriate gear, such as specialised boots and pants, to better equip himself for the cleanup operations. A third user pointed out the necessity of addressing the root cause of the pollution, recommending that Tabahi engage with the local Municipal Corporation to impose fines on those responsible for dumping waste.

Tabahi’s videos serve not only as a documentation of his efforts but also as a call to action for the community to take responsibility for environmental cleanliness. His work has sparked discussions about the need for greater civic responsibility and awareness regarding waste disposal.

Bittu Tabahi’s Cleanup Journey

Choudhary, a resident of Biaora in Rajgarh district, initiated his river cleanup project in January this year. Over the course of eight months, he has worked tirelessly to remove plastic, algae, and other debris from the Ajnar River. Reports indicate that he has cleared substantial amounts of garbage, reportedly spending around ₹30,000 on the initiative.

Despite the challenges he faces, including the lack of support from local authorities and the absence of sophisticated equipment, Tabahi has remained committed to his cause. His efforts have gained recognition beyond his local community, including appreciation from notable figures such as industrialist Anand Mahindra.

In addition to receiving accolades, Tabahi has also attracted attention from international organisations. He was recently offered a job by Boyan Slat, the founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, a Netherlands-based environmental organisation. This recognition underscores the significance of his work and the impact it has had on raising awareness about river pollution.

Future Plans for Ajnar River Cleanup

In light of the recent pollution resurgence, Tabahi has resumed his cleanup efforts, determined to restore the river to its previous state. He continues to pull out trash bags and other waste, despite acknowledging that he is not a strong swimmer and must exercise caution during his work.

Tabahi has reached out to the public for suggestions on how to enhance the efficiency of his cleanup operations. By leveraging social media, he aims to gather ideas that could facilitate quicker and more effective waste removal from the river.

As he continues his mission, Bittu Tabahi remains a symbol of grassroots environmental activism, demonstrating that individual efforts can make a significant difference in combating pollution. His journey serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in preserving natural resources and the importance of community involvement in environmental conservation.
