Bikaner Post-Delivery Kidney Failure Case Claims First Life; Probe Continues

The CSR Journal Magazine

In the shocking case from Bikaner where six women developed kidney failure post-delivery at PBM hospital, out of the six women, one of the affected women, who had been on a ventilator for nearly 20 days, passed away on Thursday. The patient has been identified as 20-year-old Preeti, she passed away due to multiple organ failure.

This tragic incident has raised questions on the safety of patients and if family and patients can trust doctors. Similar incident had happened last month in Kota government hospital where five women died due to kidney-related complications post C-section deliveries. It is alleged that the incident happened because of medical negligence.

Mystery behind post-delivery kidney failures to be delivered

All the six women who developed kidney complications post-delivery were between the age group of 20 to 27. All of them suffered excessive bleeding, their blood platelet count was low and suffered multiple organ dysfunction after undergoing cesarean section (C-section). On Thursday hospital superintendent Dr. Bhikam Chand Ghiya confirmed that Preeti, 20, passed away on Thursday afternoon due to multiple kidney failure. “Preeti’s kidneys had stopped functioning, and despite intensive treatment, she died on Thursday,” he said. Ghiya confirmed that her body has been sent for postmortem and a detailed report is awaited.

Inquiry Committee to Examine Postmortem Findings

The principal of Sardar Patel Medical College (SPMC) Surendra Kumar Verma said after the report of the postmortem comes, it will be examined with the reports from the inquiry committee. After that the exact reason behind the sudden kidney-related complication among the women would be determined. “The findings would be examined along with reports from the ongoing inquiries and laboratory tests to determine the exact cause of the complications suffered by the women.” Currently, the sample of drugs administered on women is sent for laboratory examination for investigation.
