Bihar Minister Mangal Pandey Backs EC’s Stand Against West Bengal Officials

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bihar’s Health Minister Mangal Pandey has voiced his support for the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) recent action to suspend seven officials in West Bengal. The suspensions come following allegations that the officials were acting under political pressure rather than in compliance with electoral guidelines.

Pandey expressed his concerns in a media interaction, stating that the behavior of these officials suggested a closer alignment with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee than with their official mandates.

Call for Fair and Transparent Elections

Pandey underscored the importance of conducting elections with integrity, emphasizing that public confidence is paramount. He asserted that elections must be managed in a manner that fosters trust among voters.

“The West Bengal government and its officials are not cooperating in this task,” he said, reinforcing that the ECI’s decision serves as a crucial reminder for these officials to abide by electoral rules rather than political affiliations. He reiterated, “Elections should be fair and transparent, allowing the public to have complete confidence in the process.”

Details of the Suspension

The ECI suspended the officials for “serious misconduct, dereliction of duty, and misuse of statutory powers” related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The individuals suspended include Dr. Sefaur Rahaman, who served as the Assistant Director of the Agriculture Department and Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) for the 56-Samserganj Assembly Constituency; Nitish Das, a Revenue Officer from Farakka and AERO for the 55-Farakka Assembly Constituency; Dalia Ray Choudhury, a Women Development Officer from the Maynaguri Development Block and AERO for the 16-Maynaguri Assembly Constituency; Sk. Murshid Alam, ADO from Suti Block and AERO for the 57-Suti Assembly Constituency; Satyajit Das and Joydeep Kundu, who are Joint Block Development Officer and Field Executive Officer respectively for the 139-Canning Purbo Assembly Constituency; and Debashis Biswas, who served as Joint BDO and AERO for the 229-Debra Assembly Constituency.

Next Steps for West Bengal Officials

The Chief Secretary of West Bengal has been directed by the ECI to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the suspended officials. This action underscores the Commission’s commitment to maintaining electoral integrity and ensuring that all officials adhere to the established guidelines during the electoral process. Pandey’s statements reflect ongoing tensions in the political landscape of West Bengal as the ECI’s actions garner varying reactions across party lines.
