RJD Ends BJP’s 30-Year Dominance in Patna Teachers’ Constituency

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has successfully taken control of the Patna Teachers’ constituency in the Bihar Legislative Council, marking the end of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) three-decade dominance. Dr Sanjeev Kumar Singh emerged victorious over the incumbent MLC, Prof Nawal Kishore Yadav, in a closely contested election held on Tuesday.

Prof Yadav, who had represented the constituency for nearly thirty years, faced a significant challenge as initial counting showed him leading by a narrow margin of approximately 150 votes. However, as the counting progressed, the preferential votes began to favour Singh, ultimately leading to his victory.

Other candidates in the election included Congress’s Dr Sanjay Yadav and Jan Suraaj Party’s Divya Jyoti. Following his win, Dr Sanjeev Kumar Singh expressed gratitude to the teaching community for their support, highlighting the importance of their role in this electoral shift.

Jan Suraaj Achieves Milestone in Darbhanga

In a notable development, the Jan Suraaj Party secured its first victory in a teachers’ constituency with Dr Suresh Prasad Rai winning in the Darbhanga Teachers’ constituency. He defeated the sitting Congress MLC, Madan Mohan Jha, by a margin of 324 votes, marking a significant achievement for the party.

In another constituency, Saran, an Independent candidate, Rahul Raj, who previously belonged to the BJP, won after being denied a party ticket. He garnered 4,965 votes, while the JD(U) candidate, Anand Pushkar, received 3,150 votes, placing second. Jan Suraaj’s Afaq Ahmed finished with 2,454 votes.

Rahul Raj’s success is perceived as a setback for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which had nominated a JD(U) candidate. His local support among teachers, combined with dissatisfaction over ticket distribution, reportedly contributed to his victory.

BJP Retains Tirhut Teachers’ Seat

In the Tirhut Teachers’ constituency, BJP candidate Narendra Prasad Singh secured a win against Independent nominee Bhushan Kumar Jha by a margin of 594 votes. Singh received a total of 2,945 votes, while Jha obtained 2,351 votes. CPI candidate and sitting MLC Sanjay Kumar Singh finished third with 1,967 votes.

This victory marks a return for Narendra Prasad Singh, who has previously represented the constituency in the Legislative Council. The division of votes among multiple candidates may have played a role in facilitating his win.

The outcomes across these constituencies have drawn attention to the various grievances faced by teachers, including issues related to pay scales, promotions, and transfers. The dissatisfaction surrounding these matters is believed to have influenced the defeats of incumbent MLCs in Patna, Darbhanga, and Saran.

Impact of Local Support and Candidate Selection

The recent election results underscore the significance of local support and the selection of candidates in teachers’ constituencies. The emergence of an Independent candidate in Saran and Jan Suraaj’s breakthrough in Darbhanga highlight the evolving political landscape in Bihar.

As the newly elected representatives take office, the focus will likely shift towards addressing the concerns raised by the teaching community. The electoral outcomes serve as a reminder of the changing dynamics within Bihar’s political framework. The results may prompt the political parties to reassess their strategies, particularly in relation to candidate selection and addressing local issues that resonate with voters in these constituencies.
