Bihar Government Unveils Green Hydrogen Policy and Daytime Electricity Supply for Farmers

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bihar government has announced significant initiatives to enhance the state’s renewable energy framework and support the farming community. In a meeting in Patna, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, alongside Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, highlighted plans to establish Bihar’s Green Hydrogen Policy, augment solar projects, and ensure consistent daytime electricity for agricultural purposes.

Electricity Supply Plan for Farmers

One of the primary developments is the provision of twelve hours of uninterrupted electricity for farmers from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. This will be facilitated through dedicated agricultural feeders. The initiative is anticipated to diminish reliance on diesel-powered irrigation systems, thereby lowering cultivation expenses and obviating the necessity for irrigation at night. This change is projected to enhance convenience and agricultural productivity.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Choudhary underscored the necessity for Bihar to decrease its reliance on conventional fossil fuels due to the instability of global fuel prices. He stressed the importance of investing in renewable energy technologies to secure sustainable energy supply in the long term.

The roadmap established by the government includes the swift execution of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, instructing district authorities to streamline and expedite the application and approval processes for rooftop solar energy installations.

Promotion of Solar Power in Agriculture

The Bihar administration is also keen on advancing the solarisation of agriculture under the PM-KUSUM Scheme, allowing farmers to generate solar electricity specifically for irrigation, thereby diminishing their electricity costs. Furthermore, Bihar is exploring the feasibility of installing floating solar power plants on ponds and reservoirs, which will increase renewable energy generation without utilising agricultural land.

Looking forward, the state aims to develop a comprehensive Green Hydrogen Policy to draw investment into clean energy sectors and prepare for future industrial demands. This policy is expected to stimulate the production of green hydrogen and affiliated technologies, helping to position Bihar as a burgeoning centre for sustainable energy.

Additionally, the government plans to foster increased private sector investment in solar, wind, and hydropower initiatives. This will involve creating a transparent and investment-friendly environment. Officials are hopeful this will facilitate job creation, promote industrial advancement, and enhance the state’s capabilities in renewable energy.

Social Security Measures Announced

In conjunction with these energy initiatives, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary detailed the allocation of ₹1,423.94 crore across various Central and State social security pension programmes, aiming to support 97.84 lakh beneficiaries. Eligible senior citizens, widows, and individuals with disabilities will each receive ₹1,100, with assurances that pension payments will be disbursed on the 10th of each month.

The Bihar government is confident that these comprehensive initiatives will bolster energy security, promote clean technologies, lower agricultural production costs, lure new investments, and contribute towards the state’s sustainable development objectives over the long term.

Officials encourage verification of significant information through official channels to ensure accuracy amid ongoing developments. This report is compiled based on publicly available information, aiming for high editorial standards.
