Now You Can Become a Cybersecurity Expert in 2.5 Hours! Indian Government Launches Free Online Course

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian government has introduced a free online cybersecurity course designed to educate citizens on recognising and preventing cyber fraud. This initiative comes in response to the increasing sophistication and prevalence of online scams that are affecting a growing number of individuals across the country. The course can reportedly be completed in just 2.5 hours and is intended to equip people with essential skills to navigate the digital environment safely.

Developed by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, this programme focuses on various topics, including the identification of fraudulent activities and tips for secure online practices. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certification, as posted on the official CyberDost I4C account on X.

Officials have stressed the importance of staying informed as cyber threats evolve nearly every day. The ministry’s communication highlighted a diverse range of threats, including fraudulent calls and phishing messages, making this course significant for various demographic groups, including students, working professionals, government employees, and senior citizens.

Increasing Incidents of Cyber Scams

Recent reports indicate a marked increase in cyber fraud across India, with perpetrators employing tactics such as fake bank calls, KYC updates, and dubious job offers. These scams have led to substantial financial losses for many individuals, with some losing their entire savings in a matter of minutes.

One notable incident involved a 30-year-old software professional from Visakhapatnam who allegedly lost around Rs 1.5 lakh after receiving a call from an individual posing as a bank representative. The caller promised to enhance the victim’s credit card limit and requested sensitive information, leading to unauthorised transactions shortly thereafter.

Furthermore, other victims in the same locality have experienced similar losses, collectively amounting to significant sums, as scammers exploited common vulnerabilities. In another case, an individual seeking to deactivate his unused credit card was sent a suspicious APK file by a perpetrator impersonating a bank employee, leading to theft of over Rs 1 lakh through various fraudulent means.

Government Advocacy for Digital Safety

Authorities have issued warnings about the tactics employed by fraudsters, emphasising their tendency to create a sense of urgency to manipulate victims into making rash decisions. Alerts related to fake KYC updates, instant credit card offers, and banking updates are frequently used traps that pose risks to unsuspecting individuals.

The introduction of the Cyber Hygiene Course is intended to directly address these vulnerabilities. Unlike many programs that focus solely on technical knowledge, this course provides practical safety skills that users can implement in their daily lives. The objective is to empower individuals by enhancing their understanding of cyber risks and correct responses to them.

To participate, interested individuals can access the course through the official I4C learning platform. By educating the public about these critical issues, the government seeks to foster a safer digital landscape and reduce the incidence of cyber fraud across the nation.
