Bangladesh has been in turmoil since Thursday night following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the ‘Inqilab Mancha’ platform. People have taken to the streets in Dhaka and other places to protest. During the night of violence, bulldozers were used on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi. Media offices were also set on fire. It is reported that the protesters chanted anti-Sheikh Hasina and anti-India slogans. Meanwhile, a Hindu youth was beaten to death in Mymensingh, and a journalist was shot dead in Khulna.
According to Bangladeshi media reports, a mob vandalized Mujib’s house at 32 Dhanmondi, Dhaka on Thursday night. Bulldozers were used to demolish the house. The Chhayanaut cultural centre in Dhaka was also attacked. After the vandalism, it was set on fire. Visuals from Chhayanaut, an institution devoted to Bengali culture in Bangladesh, surfaced after the mob attack. The office was vandalised and set on fire.
A police officer said, “A group of protesters suddenly attacked the building at night. The fourth and fifth floors of the building were set on fire. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control.”
Meanwhile, a group of miscreants attacked the house of a Hindu youth in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, on Thursday night. According to local media reports, after being beaten to death, his body was tied to a tree and set on fire. The deceased youth was identified as Dipu Chandra Das. He used to work in a garments factory.
Who was Sharif Osman Hadi?
Sharif Osman Hadi was a prominent Bangladeshi political activist and a central figure in the 2024 July Uprising that led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was the founder and spokesperson of ‘Inqilab Mancha’, a radical student-led socio-cultural and political platform.
On December 12, 2025, Hadi was shot in the head by masked assailants while launching his election campaign in the Bijoynagar area of central Dhaka. After initially receiving treatment in Dhaka, he was airlifted to Singapore General Hospital for advanced care. He succumbed to his injuries on December 18, 2025, at the age of 32.
Sharif Osman Hadi died around 9:45 PM on Thursday while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Following his death, unrest spread to various parts of Bangladesh. As the night progressed, protesters arrived at the offices of several prominent Bangladeshi media outlets, including ‘Prothom Alo’, and vandalized them.
The ‘Prothom Alo’ and ‘The Daily Star’ offices were set on fire. As many as 25 journalists from The Daily Star were rescued from the newspaper’s Dhaka office more than four hours after a mob stormed the premises. Additionally, protesters allegedly staged a demonstration outside the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chattogram.
Around 9:30 PM on Thursday night, a journalist was shot dead by miscreants in Khulna. The deceased was identified as Imdadul Haque Milan. Another journalist is receiving treatment in the hospital after being shot.
Notably, Hadi was a potential independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency. He was shot in the Box Culvert area of Bijoynagar while returning home by rickshaw after offering prayers. He was immediately admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Later, he was transferred to Singapore. According to police sources, assailants on a motorcycle shot him. However, the identity of the attackers remains unknown. On Wednesday night, Yunus’ press wing had announced that Hadi’s physical condition was critical. This announcement fuelled growing concerns. Finally, the tragic news arrived on Thursday. And then, Bangladesh became tense.
Sharif Osman Hadi’s body to reach Dhaka today
The body of slain student leader Sharif Osman Hadi will reach Dhaka by today evening, as per a Facebook post by Inquilab Mancha. Hadi’s family is set to depart Singapore with his body at 3:50 pm, with arrival in Bangladesh expected around 6 pm. Inqilab Manch said Hadi’s main funeral prayers will take place in Dhaka on Saturday after Zohr at Manik Mia Avenue.
Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, expressed anguish over Hadi’s death and declared Saturday a day of mourning. He also convened a high-level meeting to discuss the ongoing situation in the country.
The Election Commission of Bangladesh has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Inquilab Mancha leader Sharif Osman Hadi, remembering him as a dedicated activist who gave voice to the hopes and aspirations of Bangladesh’s youth.
