Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Elected President of Bangladesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Thursday, Bangladesh’s parliament officially elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the new President of the country. With this election, the 78-year-old politician ascends to the highest constitutional position in the nation. Prior to this election, Alamgir held the role of Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and continued to serve as the secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Alamgir’s political career spans several decades, beginning in the late 1960s when he was a student activist. His journey through various political roles has now culminated in his election as Bangladesh’s 23rd president. His sustained involvement in politics and governance has made him a notable figure in the country’s political landscape.

Historical Context and Political Background

During his time at Dhaka University, Alamgir became involved with the East Pakistan Students’ Union, a left-leaning group, and later served as its president during the 1969 uprising against the Pakistani military government. Following this period of political agitation, Alamgir participated in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, working as an organiser for freedom fighters and seeking refuge in India.

Following the war, which resulted in the independence of Bangladesh, Alamgir transitioned into government service. He began a teaching career in economics after entering the civil service’s education cadre in 1972 and later shifted towards politics, departing from his teaching role in 1986 to focus on his political ambitions. His first electoral victory came in 1988 when he was elected as an independent candidate in his hometown of Thakurgaon, marking the start of his municipal and later national political journey.

In the early 1990s, Alamgir joined the BNP amid a national movement against the authoritarian regime of then-President Hussain Muhammad Ershad. This movement saw various political factions unite, temporarily setting aside differences, which ultimately shaped Bangladesh’s modern political divide between the BNP and the Awami League.

Rise within BNP and Political Contributions

Over the years, Alamgir steadily advanced within the BNP, being appointed acting secretary general by Khaleda Zia in 2011 and later becoming the permanent holder of the position in 2016, making him the longest-serving secretary general in the party’s history. His reputation as a moderate and courteous politician earned him respect even among political adversaries, contributing positively to his leadership image.

In 2001, Alamgir was elected to parliament from Thakurgaon-1 when the BNP regained power. His subsequent political roles included serving as state minister for agriculture and later civil aviation and tourism. In the 2018 general election, he won from two constituencies but chose not to take an oath as a Member of Parliament, aligning with party decisions amid political strife.

Alamgir’s return to parliament came in February 2026, when he was re-elected from Thakurgaon-1, following the exclusion of the Awami League from the electoral process amid civil unrest. This election marked the BNP’s return to power with Tarique Rahman becoming party chief after the passing of Khaleda Zia in December 2025.

Personal Life and Future Prospects

Alamgir is married to Rahat Ara Begum, a graduate of Calcutta University with a history of employment in private insurance firms. The couple has two daughters, one pursuing postdoctoral studies in Australia and the other teaching at a school in Dhaka. With his recent election as president, Alamgir transitions from a distinguished career in activism and politics to occupy Bangladesh’s highest constitutional office.
