Balochistan Families Mark 6,196 Days of Protest, Renew Demand for Justice for Missing Persons

The CSR Journal Magazine

The situation regarding enforced disappearances in Balochistan remains critical, as demonstrated by an ongoing protest outside the Quetta Press Club. Families of missing individuals, supported by human rights activists, have marked 6,196 consecutive days of demonstration, highlighting their struggle for justice. Organised by the Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP), the protest aims to draw attention to the plight of those who have allegedly been taken into custody by security forces without due process.

The protest is led by Niaz Mohammad, a prominent activist who has been vocal about the disappearances. Participants, along with visitors, have called for accountability from the Pakistani authorities, demanding that all detainees be presented before judicial authorities as required by law. The ongoing demonstrations serve not only as a platform for affected families to voice their grievances but also as a stark reminder of the unresolved issues surrounding human rights in the region.

Statements made during the protest reflect the emotional impact of these disappearances on families, who express solidarity with one another. The plight of the missing, and the ongoing uncertainty regarding their fates, has created a pervasive atmosphere of fear and anxiety among the communities involved.

Recent Cases of Alleged Enforced Disappearances

New instances of alleged enforced disappearances have been reported, further compounding concerns among activists and families. A recent case involves 26-year-old Kambar Hamza, who was reportedly taken from his home in the Asiaabad area of Tump during a raid on June 12. Witnesses indicated that Pakistani security personnel detained him around 3:30 am, with no information regarding his whereabouts since then.

This incident contributes to a growing catalogue of similar reports that underline the ongoing crisis affecting Balochistan. The uncertainty surrounding Kambar Hamza has raised alarm among local communities, who fear for the safety of individuals in the region.

In a separate development, two individuals previously reported missing have returned home following alleged release from custody. Family members reported that Obaidullah, whose full name is Obaidullah son of Muhammad Yaqoob, was freed after spending 12 days in detention. He had been taken from the Hajika area of Surab on June 1, with his return marked on June 12.

Authorities Silence on Disappearances and Releases

In another case, Abdul Rauf, a farmer from Aminabad in Chaghi district, also reunited with his family following an extended period of disappearance. His family indicated that he was missing after a late-night raid on May 29. Notably, Abdul Rauf has a history of similar experiences, having previously been missing for nearly two and a half years before his release in 2018.

The lack of official statements from Pakistani authorities regarding these recent allegations of enforced disappearances as well as the reported releases has raised further questions about the government’s commitment to addressing human rights concerns in Balochistan. Critics assert that without transparency and accountability, the plight of the missing will remain unaddressed, contributing to an ongoing cycle of pain for affected families.

As the VBMP protests continue, there is growing pressure on authorities to respond to the urgent calls for justice and ensure that those affected by enforced disappearances receive necessary support and clarity regarding the fate of their loved ones. The persistence of such protests underscores the ongoing struggle for human rights in the region, demanding sustained attention and action from both local and international communities.
