Baloch Liberation Army Establishes Naval Wing and Claims Initial Maritime Operation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) announced on April 14, 2023, the establishment of a naval wing designated as the Hammal Maritime Defence Force (HMDF). This development was reportedly confirmed by the group through an extensive statement released to the media. The HMDF aims to serve as a “national navy” intended to safeguard the maritime territory of Balochistan, according to statements made by BLA representatives.

Details of the Alleged Maritime Operation

The BLA claims that its inaugural operation occurred at around 10:00 AM in the Jiwani region, specifically in an area named “Mil Tiyab.” Allegations further suggest that the group’s fighters targeted a patrolling vessel belonging to what the BLA termed the “occupying Pakistani Navy.” Details from the BLA allege that all three personnel aboard the vessel were killed, identified as Naik Afzal, Sepoy Jameel, and Sepoy Umar.

In the statement, spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch asserted that the BLA fighters successfully returned to their hideouts after executing the operation. The BLA expressed that this transition into maritime actions represents a significant strategic evolution in its military practices, aiming to control and protect Baloch maritime interests.

The establishment of the HMDF marks a new chapter in the BLA’s ongoing struggle, with the group declaring that the campaign for Baloch independence is now broadening to include maritime zones, which they claim will serve as a “graveyard” for their adversaries. They reiterated their commitment to preventing the exploitation of Baloch resources and disrupting opposing naval operations.

Media Release Supporting the Claims

The BLA’s media wing, Hakkal, disseminated a video, reportedly lasting two minutes and 32 seconds, which showcases visuals of the alleged attack. The footage depicts four individuals wearing masks, advancing towards the sea before boarding a speedboat. Many observers are scrutinising these claims and the accompanying visuals for authenticity.

During the video, the masked individuals reportedly express sentiments of determination, stating, “As long as even one son of the Baloch exists on this land, we will not allow you to stay on this sea or this land.” They further declare, “We are ready today, we were ready yesterday, and we will continue to be ready in the future; you will be targeted everywhere,” conveying a strong message of resistance.

This declaration and the subsequent maritime operation illustrate a notable expansion of BLA activities into coastal zones, signalling a shift in tactics that appears aimed at increasing their operational capabilities against the Pakistani Navy. The implications of the BLA’s naval wing formation and its claimed activities have raised concerns within security circles, warranting attention to the evolving dynamics of insurgency in the region.
