Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line Celebrates One Year With Over 15 Lakh Passengers

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram has marked its first year of operation, significantly improving connectivity, passenger movement, and freight transportation within the region. This 51.38-kilometre railway corridor, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, has directly benefited the capital city, Aizawl, by extending the national railway network to its doorstep.

Built through challenging mountainous terrain, the line features impressive engineering, comprising 153 bridges and 45 tunnels that span nearly 16 kilometres. Among its structural highlights is a towering bridge standing at 114 metres, which has become noteworthy for its engineering excellence in the region.

In its inaugural year, the railway line has facilitated over 1,100 train trips and served more than 15 lakh passengers. Routes connecting Sairang to major cities like Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi, and Silchar have experienced high demand, with many trains running at full capacity. The results reflect the line’s essential role in enhancing the mobility of residents and visitors alike.

Passenger Services and Freight Movement

Passenger services have enjoyed remarkable success, particularly the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express, which marked Mizoram’s first direct premium rail service to the national capital. This train reported an average occupancy exceeding 145 per cent. Additionally, the Sairang-Kolkata service observed an occupancy rate of more than 140 per cent, while the Sairang-Guwahati service maintained an average occupancy of over 110 per cent, as confirmed by officials.

The railway line has also had a significant impact on freight movement in Mizoram. Throughout the year, over 2,500 freight wagons have been delivered to Sairang, transporting essential commodities including construction materials, foodgrains, fertilisers, and automobiles. The inaugural cargo train arrived on September 14, 2025, delivering over 26,000 bags of cement from Tetelia near Guwahati. In December 2025, an important consignment of 119 Maruti cars was transported to Sairang by rail.

Furthermore, the first parcel consignment from Sairang, which involved Anthurium flowers shipped to Delhi, was booked on September 19, 2025. Such developments highlight the railway line’s role in boosting local trade and enhancing market access for various Mizoram products.

Tourism Growth and Economic Opportunities

The introduction of the railway line has also stimulated tourism in Mizoram. Reports indicate an impressive increase of over 86 per cent in tourism following the commencement of railway services. This surge in tourist numbers further demonstrates the railway’s potential to enhance the state’s attractiveness as a travel destination.

In addition to bolstering tourism, the railway has opened new avenues for local businesses. Products unique to Mizoram, such as handloom fabrics, bamboo crafts, and local flora, are now more accessible to broader markets. This connectivity is expected to positively influence the livelihoods of many in the region.

Overall, the Bairabi-Sairang railway line has quickly established itself as a pivotal infrastructure project. It has effectively reduced travel barriers while providing fresh opportunities for passengers, traders, students, and entrepreneurs across Mizoram, facilitating a more interconnected community and economy.
