The CSR Journal Magazine

Awarapan 2 has experienced a remarkable resurgence at the box office, reportedly nearing the Rs 200 crore milestone globally. The film, featuring Emraan Hashmi, has attracted audiences with its nostalgic value, transforming from a mere sequel into a successful theatrical venture.

On Day 9, the film recorded a notable 43.5 per cent increase in its net collections compared to Day 8. As per the industry tracker Sacnilk, it earned Rs 8.25 crore net from 10,008 screenings, bringing its total net collection in India to Rs 127.50 crore.

Additionally, the film’s gross collection in India currently stands at Rs 152.11 crore. The positive trend indicates a sustained interest from viewers, contributing to its overall performance.

Continued Success Overseas

Awarapan 2 has also shown resilience in international markets, generating Rs 1.50 crore in gross earnings on Day 9. Its total overseas gross collection now amounts to Rs 28.80 crore, culminating in a worldwide gross of Rs 180.91 crore.

The international appeal further emphasizes the film’s reach beyond Indian borders, attributed to its nostalgic elements and contemporary marketing strategies. This balance of old and new possibly resonates with a diverse audience.

The film’s box office trajectory has been significant, especially considering it released simultaneously with Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947. The combination of nostalgia and effective promotional efforts has likely bolstered its appeal.

Reflection on the Franchise’s Legacy

The original Awarapan, released on June 29, 2007, initially did not achieve great success at the box office. However, over the years, it garnered a dedicated fan base, particularly for its memorable soundtrack. This historical context has been pivotal in propelling Awarapan 2’s success.

Seventeen years later, the sentiment attached to the original film appears to have provided a strong foundation for the sequel. The refreshing renditions of songs from the earlier film have likely struck a chord with audiences more familiar with the music.

The connection that older viewers feel towards Awarapan has undoubtedly influenced the current theatrical performance of its sequel. This emotional engagement with audiences plays an essential role in the film’s continuing success.
