Apple Manufactures One in Four iPhones in India

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple is significantly enhancing its manufacturing operations in India, with recent reports indicating that the company now produces 25 percent of all iPhones in the country. This shift is part of Apple’s broader strategy to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on China amid ongoing trade tensions and associated tariffs imposed by the United States. In 2025, Apple is estimated to have assembled approximately 55 million iPhones in India, a notable increase from the 36 million units manufactured the previous year, marking a year-on-year production rise of 53 percent.

Production Statistics

Globally, Apple’s total iPhone production was recorded at between 220 million and 230 million units. Consequently, this means that about one in every four iPhones sold around the world is now manufactured in India. The company’s operations in India include the assembly of the latest iPhone 17 series, which was fully produced in the country from the very beginning of its launch. Additionally, older models such as the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 continue to be assembled for both local and international markets.

Incentives for Growth

India’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme has played a crucial role in bolstering Apple’s manufacturing capabilities, enabling the company to balance out various cost challenges associated with production in India, such as supply chain constraints and logistical issues. Discussions are ongoing between manufacturers and the Indian government regarding the potential extension of these incentives, as the current subsidies are set to conclude on March 31, 2026.

Assembly Partners and Employment Impact

Apple operates five iPhone assembly plants in India, collaborating with partners such as Foxconn, Tata Electronics, and Pegatron Corp. The company’s supply chain encompasses more than 45 suppliers, contributing to a significant economic impact in the region. Reports suggest that Apple has generated over 350,000 direct and indirect jobs through its manufacturing activities in India, further solidifying its commitment to the country’s workforce.

Economic Contributions

According to government statistics, Apple produced over $45 billion worth of iPhones in India from 2021 to 2025, with approximately 76 percent of this, amounting to around $34 billion, attributed to exports. This substantial economic contribution underscores Apple’s growing significance in the Indian smartphone market.

Market Presence Strengthened

Apple has witnessed a marked increase in its share of the Indian smartphone market, particularly in the premium segment. As per data from Counterpoint Research, the company’s market share in this segment reached 12 percent during the fourth quarter of 2025. The iPhone 16 emerged as the top-selling smartphone in this period, with sales reaching 6.5 million units between January and November 2025, highlighting the brand’s popularity among Indian consumers.
