Aadhaar App Now Lets Users Update Email ID for Free via Smartphone

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced an enhancement to the Aadhaar App, allowing residents to update their email ID directly from their smartphones. This feature became available on July 1, 2026, and is being offered at no cost for a duration of six months. The functionality can be accessed on both Android and iOS devices, streamlining the update process for users.

Since the launch, uptake has been significant. Within just 48 hours, more than 2.5 lakh individuals reportedly used the app to amend their email addresses, as stated by the Ministry of Electronics and IT. This quick adoption highlights the demand for more efficient Aadhaar management tools.

Importance of Linking Email IDs to Aadhaar

Linking an email ID to an Aadhaar account serves several important purposes. Users will receive immediate email notifications whenever an Aadhaar authentication request is initiated. This feature enhances security by allowing individuals to monitor who is accessing their personal identity information.

The new email update function is part of UIDAI’s broader initiative to facilitate easier access to Aadhaar services via the app. Previously, users were only able to update their mobile numbers and addresses, but this recent addition signifies an expansion in the app’s capabilities.

Historically, more than 40 million individuals have utilised the Aadhaar App to update their mobile numbers, and around one million have successfully modified their addresses since the app’s inception. These statistics underscore the app’s growing relevance in managing personal documentation.

Recent Enhancements to the Aadhaar App

The newly updated Aadhaar App is designed with a focus on privacy and user control over personal data. It supersedes the earlier mAadhaar App by enhancing security features and usability. Unlike its predecessor, the current app does not require complete Aadhaar details during verification, utilising a selective sharing approach to protect user information.

Moreover, the app includes several advanced features such as QR-based verification, face authentication, and a biometric lock, alongside the ability to track authentication history. This allows users to see when and where their Aadhaar details have been utilised, thus adding an additional layer of security.

The app also accommodates up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device, making it more convenient for families to manage multiple accounts. The combination of these features demonstrates UIDAI’s commitment to utilising technology to improve user experience and protect personal information.
