While docked in Baltimore, INS Sudarshini is scheduled to engage in various maritime activities along with community outreach initiatives. This visit coincides with the Sail250 Maryland celebrations, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. The Indian Navy’s tall ship aims to foster goodwill and collaboration through these activities, reinforcing the longstanding ties between the two nations.
Prior to its current visit, INS Sudarshini actively participated in the Sail250 Virginia celebrations held in Norfolk from June 19 to 23. During this event, the ship was part of a fleet of tall ships that represented their countries during the Parade of Sail and the City Crew Parade. The diverse representation of international vessels highlighted the spirit of maritime diplomacy.
This significant transoceanic voyage, originating from Kochi, marks a journey of over 13,000 nautical miles spanning five months. It reflects India’s rich maritime traditions and reinforces the nation’s commitment to maritime outreach across global waters. The Indian Navy officially stated that this expedition embodies the ethos of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” promoting friendship and mutual trust among societies worldwide.
Expedition’s Background and Previous Port Calls
INS Sudarshini is specifically designed as a sail training ship, aimed at imparting traditional sailing skills to naval personnel while simultaneously promoting international engagement. Before arriving in Baltimore, the vessel made a significant stop in Antigua, departing from the island nation on May 31 after a four-day port call.
While in Antigua, INS Sudarshini enhanced maritime cooperation with Caribbean nations, showcasing India’s dedication to cultivating strong relationships within the region. The visit included meetings with local dignitaries, notably Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. Additionally, the ship’s Commanding Officer engaged with Brigadier Telbert Benjamin, Chief of Defence Staff of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force, underscoring the importance of bilateral military dialogue.
The ongoing Lokayan 26 expedition has been pivotal in reinforcing India’s maritime outreach objectives. With the ship’s continuous engagements and port calls, the initiative aims to cultivate enduring friendships, cooperation, and trust among nations, further establishing India as a proactive player in maritime affairs across the globe.
