PM Modi Commences Six-Day Tour to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a six-day trip to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand, aimed at bolstering India’s vision for a secure and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. This visit, scheduled from July 6 to July 11, 2026, is intended to reinforce India’s Act East Policy and advance the MAHASAGAR vision, which focuses on mutual growth and maritime security.

In his departure statement, the Prime Minister highlighted that this trip will further enhance bilateral relations with the three nations. He stated that it will build upon the existing momentum in India’s relationships, providing opportunities for cooperation in strategic, economic, and people-centric sectors.

Modi emphasised the significance of the MAHASAGAR initiative—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions—which aims to promote stability and growth throughout the maritime domain. He reiterated India’s commitment to fostering a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region during this tour.

First Stop: Indonesia

The Prime Minister will begin his visit in Indonesia, where he is scheduled to stay from July 6 to July 8 at the invitation of President Prabowo Subianto. This marks Modi’s first bilateral engagement with Indonesia since their ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during his previous visit in 2018. The visit is seen as a continuation of the diplomatic exchanges that began with President Prabowo’s attendance as the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations in January 2025.

During his time in Indonesia, Modi plans to engage with the Indian diaspora and is expected to visit the UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta with President Prabowo. He has described the temple as a representation of the deep cultural ties between the two nations, enhancing mutual understanding.

This leg of the tour is particularly significant, as it represents an ongoing commitment to deepening bilateral ties and showcases the cultural and historical connections that underpin India’s relations with Indonesia.

Second Stop: Australia

The next leg of Modi’s journey will take him to Melbourne, Australia, where he is expected to hold discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The focus of these talks will be to further the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with particular attention on defence, security, and trade.

The Prime Minister has expressed enthusiasm about engaging with the Indian community in Melbourne, which he has identified as an essential pillar of the bilateral relationship. Discussions are likely to expand into areas such as education, mobility, and people-to-people exchanges, reinforcing the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora to Australia.

This meeting in Melbourne is poised to facilitate deeper collaboration, which may include enhanced partnerships in various sectors between the two countries, advancing mutual interests.

Final Stop: New Zealand

Modi’s last destination will be Auckland, where he will meet with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. This meeting follows Luxon’s visit to India in March this year and is expected to build upon the positive momentum generated by that exchange.

Key topics for discussion will include expanding economic, trade, and commercial relations, particularly following the signing of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement. Modi anticipates that the engagement will strengthen bilateral ties further.

Additionally, the Prime Minister plans to address a large gathering of the Indian community during this part of the visit, acknowledging their immense contributions across various fields. The acknowledgment of the diaspora underlines the importance of cultural and economic connections between India and New Zealand.
