Veganism

Veganism has taken up the global food industry by a storm. People looking for healthier lifestyle have started to move towards adapting veganism. Many celebrities like Beyonce, Jay Z, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez, Sonam Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Sonakshi Sinha, Aamir Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez have committed to veganism. This has turned many more heads towards the lifestyle.

The word Vegan has gained a lot more interest since 2017. According to the google trends, veganism related searches had increased by more than 50% in the last one year. However, even today many people are not very clear about the concept and its benefits to health and environment.

The Vegan society defines veganism as a way of living which seeks to exclude all forms of exploitation of and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. Hence, a vegan diet seeks to exclude all the meat or dairy products as well as honey. Vegan lifestyle also includes giving up on using leather, silk or taking horse or camel rides.

Veganism is taken up for health or moral reasons by different people. Contrary to what many traditionalists believe, vegan lifestyle is quite nutritious and sufficient for any kind of physical or mental activity. Infact, Kuntal Joisher, a Mumbaikar who is a vegan, set an example by succeeding to climb Mount Everest. According to a Harvard Study, people who follow a vegan diet are less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. Vegan food is also lighter to digest which is why it is recommended for weight loss, better kidney and heart function.

Apart from the innumerable health benefits that comes along with vegan lifestyle, there are several ways in which it benefits the environment too. Live stock drink more fresh water than other creatures. About 2400 gallons of water is consumed on an average to produce just one pond of beef. Rearing cattle for meat is not only unethical but also causing a lot of water loss. According to a report from the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN, the worldwide production of livestock produces 18 per cent of humans’ greenhouse gases. Hence, Veganism also prevents air pollution.

There are many health and environmental reasons to take up veganism. However, could there be any reason bigger than not wanting to rear a life for a selfish purpose?
