“8 Crore Vegetarians Worldwide Through ISKCON “: VP Radharaman Das on West Bengal Mid-Day Meal Row

The CSR Journal Magazine

ISKCON Vice President Radharaman Das has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the West Bengal mid-day meal scheme. This discussion comes in light of reports alleging that eggs might be excluded from the menu if ISKCON takes charge of meal preparations in schools. Das emphasised ISKCON’s broad vegetarian outreach while responding to the issue.

Focus on Nutritional Comparisons

In his remarks, Radharaman Das dismissed concerns about nutritional inadequacies in vegetarian meals. He argued that vegetarian sources can provide equal or even superior protein content compared to eggs. Refuting claims of misinformation, he presented data highlighting the protein levels in various vegetarian foods. For instance, he pointed out that 100 grams of soy chunks contain approximately 52 to 54 grams of protein, which is around four times more than eggs.

Further illustrating his point, Das mentioned that common legumes like lentils contain about 25 grams of protein per 100 grams, effectively surpassing eggs again. Paneer, another staple in vegetarian diets, offers around 22 grams of protein. He encouraged discourse based on scientific facts regarding nutrition.

Das also noted the relationship between vegetarianism and strong nutritional outcomes in certain regions of India. He referred to a recent overview showing that areas with higher vegetarian populations, such as Rajasthan with a 61 per cent vegetarian demographic, tend to exhibit improved health metrics.

Global Trends and Notable Examples

To reinforce his argument for vegetarianism, Radharaman Das cited examples from various sectors, including sports. He mentioned renowned cricketer Virat Kohli and his wife as examples of successful vegetarians, asserting that their dietary choice has not hindered their performance in sports. He also highlighted that several Olympic gold medalists follow vegetarian diets, reflecting a growing global trend towards vegetarianism and veganism.

Das remarked that this shift towards vegetarianism is increasingly supported by scientific data and trends. He reiterated that the figures he presented further validate the health benefits associated with a vegetarian lifestyle and that more individuals are recognising these advantages.

The controversy gained momentum after social media claims suggested that alternatives like paneer and soybean might replace eggs in the mid-day meal programme. On June 26, Radharaman Das clarified that no definitive changes had been made to the meal menu and that inaccurate information was being circulated.

Clarification on Meal Menu Decisions

In a post on social media platform X, Radharaman Das addressed the public’s concerns regarding a proposed menu for the mid-day meal in Kolkata. He stated that the viral menu had not been finalised and that accurate details would be released once a decision was reached. He urged the public to avoid sharing unverified proposals.

The central government’s Ministry of Education oversees the PM POSHAN scheme, which ensures hot cooked meals for children in various government and government-aided schools. This scheme encourages states and Union Territories to tailor menus to local conditions, while meeting established nutritional guidelines.

Additionally, guidelines have been issued to ensure quality, safety, and hygiene in food preparation, which includes provisions for using quality-certified ingredients, training cooks, and mandatory tasting by the school management committee and teachers prior to serving meals. The responsibility for implementing the scheme remains with individual state governments and Union Territory administrations.
