26-Year-Old India Student Dies by Suicide in United States Amid Job Hunt Struggles

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 26-year-old Indian national, Iraganaboyina Chandu, has reportedly died by suicide in the United States after facing challenges in securing employment following his master’s graduation. The student was originally from the Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh and had recently completed his postgraduate studies in Chicago. Residents of the local Indian community are expressing profound concern regarding this incident and its implications for students studying abroad.

Chandu had been actively searching for employment in the weeks leading up to this tragedy. According to family members, the ongoing struggle and emotional burden related to unemployment significantly affected his mental well-being.

Sources close to the family stated that he experienced considerable stress, particularly over his inability to find work, which added financial pressure on his family back home, especially on his father, who is employed as a security guard.

Fundraising Efforts to Support Chandu’s Family

In the wake of Chandu’s death, members of the Indian expatriate community in the United States have started a fundraising campaign aiming to gather USD 120,000. The immediate objective of this initiative is to raise USD 25,000 to facilitate the transport of Chandu’s remains to India. The fundraising platform detailed that the complete costs associated with repatriation—including funeral services, legal documentation, and transport—are around USD 25,000, an amount that the family is unable to manage on their own.

Any surplus funds acquired through this campaign will be allocated to assist the family in handling Chandu’s outstanding educational debts. As of now, the fundraising efforts have achieved notable success, accumulating over USD 76,500 within just two days.

Organisers of the fundraiser provided an update, confirming that all necessary protocols are in place and Chandu’s body currently resides in a funeral home. They have indicated that, due to limited flight availability, the plan is to airlift Chandu’s remains back to India on the upcoming Sunday, while efforts are being made to expedite this process.

Government Involvement in the Repatriation Process

On a governmental level, actions are being taken to hasten the repatriation of Chandu’s body. Nara Lokesh, the Minister of Andhra Pradesh, received a request for assistance through social media. The appeal was posted on X by Sai Bollineni, a member of the TDP IT cell, who tagged Lokesh in the correspondence.

In response, Lokesh extended his condolences to the grieving family and committed to facilitating a smooth and uncomplicated transport of the remains. Furthermore, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu also acknowledged the situation, stating that he liaised with relevant authorities to ensure the prompt handling of the matter.

This unfortunate event has raised awareness about the immense pressures faced by international students, particularly regarding financial concerns and precarious job prospects. As efforts continue, both authorities and community members are dedicated to ensuring Chandu’s remains return to India as swiftly as possible, allowing the family to conduct the necessary final rites.
