21-Year-Old Devotee Dies After Electrocution at ISKCON Temple in Vrindavan

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident occurred at the ISKCON temple in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, where a 21-year-old devotee reportedly died from an electric shock. The victim has been identified as Abhigyan Gupta, who hailed from Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh. He had arrived at the temple with his father, Anil Kumar Gupta, for religious observances on June 17, 2026.

The incident transpired near the temple entrance, where a water-spray cooler had been installed to provide relief to visitors during the hot summer months. This cooling facility was allegedly set up by the Mathura-Vrindavan Municipal Corporation to enhance the comfort of the devotees.

CCTV footage from the scene captured a bustling atmosphere, with numerous devotees passing through the area before the incident unfolded. Suddenly, Abhigyan appeared to be affected after coming into contact with the cooler, losing his balance and attracting the attention of nearby onlookers.

Witness Accounts and Immediate Response

Upon witnessing the distress of the young man, several bystanders turned towards him. Initial cautiousness was noted, as a few witnesses refrained from approaching him directly, likely due to concern over ongoing electrical current. However, others rushed to provide assistance as Abhigyan collapsed close to the cooling installation.

Local residents and temple attendees quickly organised to transport the victim to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care. Unfortunately, medical staff pronounced him dead upon arrival, leading to alarm among those who witnessed the event.

A medical professional who attended to Abhigyan relayed that the hospital was alerted about his electrocution from the cooler situated on the temple grounds. The doctor reported that upon examination, the young man showed no signs of life. His heart had ceased functioning, and his pupils were fully dilated, indicating a critical condition upon arrival.

Medical Response and Aftermath

The attending doctor conveyed that despite the severe level of distress in which Abhigyan arrived, the medical team undertook significant efforts to revive him. Emergency resuscitation measures were initiated, including CPR and the administration of necessary medications in an attempt to restore his life; however, these efforts proved to be unsuccessful.

This incident has sparked serious concerns regarding the maintenance and safety standards of public cooling systems designed for the comfort of devotees and visitors during peak summer. Concerns about electrical safety checks and the upkeep of such installations have emerged as vital issues in the aftermath of this unfortunate event.

Following the incident, authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances leading to the electrocution, with initial findings suggesting a possible link to insufficient maintenance of the water-spray cooler. There is an urgent need for a review of safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future, safeguarding the lives of those visiting public spaces.
